It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (23 October)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

So i’m currently alternating laying in bed with my feet up and on the couch catching up with some TV viewing (yeah, I’m like uber far behind and just now finishing up Season 2 of Outlander) – recovering from running (and some walking) of the Marine Corps Marathon yesterday. Overall, I was happy with how I did – it was a 35min-ish improvement over last year – but I still missed my goal time of 5:30 by 30minutes (but since I walked the Blue Mile and had a couple of epic potty breaks), I’m happy with h untilow I did. But i’ll be back next year – 2 years down and 3 to go until I hit the MCM runner’s club (meaning I won’t have to go through the lottery to register each year). If you have ever even thought about running a marathon, I HIGHLY recommend the Marine Corps Marathon in DC – you start at the Pentagon, hit many of the tourist attractions (you run by the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, and through different parts of the city) – it might not be the easiest course (hello, uphills and mile 3 kind of suck) – but there is a reason why its called the People’s Marathon.

I was kind of bummed that I didn’t get to fully participate in Dewey’s Read-a-thon this year – but resting and relaxing pre-marathon was more important. Although I did get a little bit of reading done – just not up to my normal read-a-thon goals. This week was a pretty slow reading week in general – I actually only finished up 3 books – I blame it on a busy week at work and just being in a bit of a reading funk.

Here’s hoping that this week will be more productive – although since I have my first weekend class for my Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) this weekend – I’m pretty sure that will cut into my reading time (oh the things that I do to try and advance my career 🙂 ) Or rather – lots of reading to do from various journals and textbooks, but not fun stuff that I would normally chose to read. But at least I’ll have the drive to Quantico on both Saturday and Sunday to get some audiobook time in. On the pile this week, finishing up my current audiobook (A Stranger in the House – Shari Lapena), although it feels kind of like cheating to list it, since I only have like 20 minutes left. Once I finish that up, my next listen is Murder by Mocha – Cleo Coyle – I know that I’m picking up a series 10 books in but yeah, I can be a rebel at times 🙂 On the reading pile are a couple of ARCs – Running With A Sweet Talker – Jami Albright and Secret Heir – Victoria Pinder. I also have the most recent Katie Maguire series (Dead Girls Dancing and the newest Rizzoli and Isles (I Know A Secret

What about you – what are you reading this slightly overcast Monday? (and seriously Mother Nature, why couldn’t you give us this weather yesterday!)

First Lines Friday – 20 October 2017

First Line Friday’s is a weekly feature, hosted by Hoarding Books – so grab a book off your pile and share the first line

Jack Avery stared at the scene before him while sucking on a cherry lollipop his godson Aiden had given him.

Running With a Sweet Talker – Jami Albright

A few months ago, I borrowed a book from Amazon Kindle Unlimited called Running from the Rock Star. What I didn’t know at the time was a) how much I was going to enjoy it and b) that the author would end up on my auto-buy list PDQ (pretty darn quick). There was something fresh about her writing, which was very needed as a run of a few less than stellar reads. So when I got an email from her a couple weeks ago, asking if I wanted to review the next book in the series – i’m pretty sure my response was something that went, not only yes, but heck yeah (or maybe gimme gimme gimme). With Dewey Read-a-thon this week (although I’m not fully participating), Running with a Sweet Talker is on the top of my to-read pile.

First Line Fridays – 13 October 2017

Caroline’s wrist turned an flicked as the steel tongue of her crochet hook dipped in and ut, mirroring the movement of the fiddle’s bow.

From:
Caroline: Little House, Revisited – Sarah Miller

When I saw a preview of this book show up in my email, I KNEW that I had to read it. As an 7(ish) year old, I devoured the Little House on the Prairie books as well as watching reruns of the TV (running home from school to watch it at 3pm with a snack was like a daily routine). I’ve really enjoyed some of the other retellings of classic books that I’ve read recently (and equally excited about some of the other upcoming ones I’ve seen authors I follow talk about…like Marilla from Anne of Green Gables).

I’m only a chapter into Caroline so far – but I have a feeling that its going to be a great read!

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (9 Oct)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

So obviously from my lack of blog posts in the last two months, I’ve been busy as all get out – its been peak triathlon training season and in my ultimate wisdom, I also signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon (2 weeks to go – yikes – what the heck was I thinking!!!) On top of all my training shenanigans, work in general has been busy – so in the ultimate sacrifice, reading (or at least a reduction in reading) and blogging had to be sacrificed! But never you fear – I’m getting back into the swing of things and hope to have more frequent posting in the next couple of weeks 🙂

Now on to the fun stuff! I have the day off work today (thank you DoD) which could be a good thing – between my last longish training on Friday (15 miles at an 11:40 page) and then volunteering at Ironman Maryland (if you ever want to see insane athletes – these guys – yes i’m one of them – cover 140.6 miles in no more than 17hrs – 2.4mile swim, 112 miles on the bike and then a marathon), I am rather stiff and sore (for lack of a better word) – so curling up in bed today sounds like a great idea (but its wet and drizzly out which helps the desire to be a sloth).

My reading this past week can be described as sexy electrician, quilting friends, matchmaking moose and irish police procedural binge read. For the most part it was a fairly successful reading week, although, i’ll admit, while I have enjoyed other books in the Elm Creek Quilts series – the characters have been noticeably more annoying to me in recent reads/listens.

Currently Reading:
So I discovered Irish author Graham Masterton a few months ago when I picked up #7 in his Katie Maguire series from my local library. It hit the spot in the dark and torturous column (something I see a lot of in the Nordic Noir mysteries) and so have proceeded to binge read the first 4 books in the series – and getting ready to start book 5. I also have no doubt, if I finish up Blood Sisters this week, that I will roll into book 6 (Buried).

Along with Blood Sisters, I also have a couple of ARC’s from authors to read and review – Freeing the Beast (Tina Donahue) and Pupcakes (Annie England Noblin). I’ve read stuff by Tina Donahue before and found myself needing to fan my face because of the steaminess of the writing. This is a re-release of a book published a few years ago by Samhain (speaking of, I used to read tons of their books, how did I not discover her before this year!!!). Annie England Noblin is a new author to me, but i’ll admit to being a sucker for the dog on the cover (even if i’m not a huge pug fan in general…). Here’s hoping I enjoy Pupcakes and find a new author to add to my repitoire.

A Month in Reading – March

“March is a month of considerable frustration – it is so near spring and yet across a great deal of the country the weather is still so violent and changeable that outdoor activity in our yards seems light years away.”
–  Thalassa Cruso

I found the above quote on a blog – and it took hits a head on how I’ve felt a majority of March. The weather seemed to go from warm (I think there were a few days where we hit 80 degrees) and then cold enough that I actually got a snow day from work (although snow by my house was more like slush…). It was hard to figure out what to wear to work each money – because without doubt, I would either freeze or fry on my way in. And I think this weather is part of what contributed to my reading funk. I just felt like everything I read this month (for the most part) was like a turtle slogging through molasses.

March Reading Stats:
Books Read: 15
– Fiction: 11
– Non-Fiction: 4
Audiobooks Listened to: 6.5 (one was about half listened to in Feb)
New to Me Authors: 7
In Progress Series Continued: 7
Re-Reads: 1 (or rather re-listens)

Shortest Book:
5My shortest book of the month came in as a “whooping” 51pgs when I decided to return to visit Knights Bridge in Christmas at Carriage Hill written by Carla Neggers. I also read 2 of the other books in this series during the month as I get caught up on it (mostly because I have the newest one in the series, fresh from the new release shelf at the library)

Longest Book:
My longest book (or rather audiobook) of the month was #12 in Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series at a legit 576pgs or 13hrs and 40min of listening! That being said, I definitely don’t recommend you do what I did and bounce around this series – because I was seriously lost with some of the background (I normally cringe about reading a series out of order, but this audiobook was an Audie nominee and I didn’t have time to go back and fill in the gaps with my listing)/

Books I was Looking Forward to in March (that I actually read!)
Of the three books I listed on my February summary post that I was looking forward to reading in March – I only actually got to one of them…but it was probably one of my more favorite reads of the month – there is a reason why Lisa Kleypas is a comfort read for me and Devil in Spring didn’t let me down. And I’m already trying to guess who I think the next couple in this series (if there is another book) might be…

Status of Armchair Audies Listening:
March brings to a close the first full month of my listening for the 2017 Armchair Audies (since the nominees were announced part-way through February). As of the end of March, I have listened to 5 of the 6 nominees in the Erotica category; 3 of 6 in the Young Adult category and haven’t even started the Paranormal category (although that is first on my list for April listening). Ok, actually I take that back – I started to listen to one of the paranormal books and kept getting distracted – so I need to try again (mostly because it was another late entry in a longer series and I haven’t read the previous books)…here’s to another solid month of listening in April!

Books I’m looking forward to in April
Razr – Larissa Ione (release date April 11) – an elf and an angel…that sold me the description right there – plus I loved all the previous books in the Demonica series, so a new addition is needed!
My Kind of You – Tracy Brogan – besides the epic cover love that I have for this book – Tracy’s characters are just so real and I love that many of her heroines are older than the ever popularly 20 year olds (and often divorced/widowed/have kids etc).
Blade Bound – Chloe Neill – i’m going to be sad to see the end of the Chicagoland Vampires series – Some Girls Bite (the first in the series) was one of the first reviews I ever posted on my blog wayyy back when. Its been a ride full of ups and downs but Ethan and Merit (or Methan) will always live on!

A Month in Reading – February

february

And with a blink of an eye, February is gone and March is here…I swear, it feels like I just got done writing my month in review for January and now I have to write another month…Kudos to Book Date for providing the inspiration for these month in review posts (and the great month graphics). February is typically one of my favorite months of the year because its normally that nice temperature between winter and spring…but apparently DC didn’t get that memo this year…seriously high 70’s for like a week and a half, followed by a tornado last weekend! Holy bi-polar weather batman.

On a reading/listening front, February is also a favorite month because its when the Audio Publishers Assocation (APA) announces their finalists for the Audies! Which means, its also the kick off for the Armchair Audies – an annual event hosted by Literate Housewife where listeners/bloggers listen to nominees in different categories and attempt to pick who they think the winner will be. I’m not going to regurgitate the process – but let’s just say, February has been a fun month so far with 4 of the books in my 3 categories completed (yeah, i’m a bit of an overachiever).

February Summary:
Books Read: 27
Audiobooks Listened: 5 (and 20hrs of another book)

storm-damagesMost annoying ending to a book:
Storm Damages – Magda Alexander – holy frickin cliff-hangers batman! Ugh, I should have done more research before reading this because then I would have known…and I didn’t enjoy it enough to warrant paying for the next book in the series 😦

Longest on Shelf
This was a race between two books that I read in February – both Sarah’s Key and The Sari Shop Widow were purchased in 2009. But ultimately, Sarah’s Key had been on Mt TBR the longest – with a purchase date of April 1, 2009 (for a grand total of 2864 days!)

allegience-of-honorSeries in Progress
Since I’m horrible about starting series and getting distracted – I’m trying to keep a running tally of series that I’ve had in progress and read installments of during the month. This month I got caught up on Cherise Sinclair’s Masters of the Shadowlands series with Mischief and the Masters. I also got caught up on Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changling series with Allegiance of Honor (and even read a couple of the novellas in between the main books). I also went back and filled one of the gaps in Singh’s Guild Hunter series with Archangel’s Storm.

january-carlanMost Read Author
Both a new to me author and most read during the month was Audrey Carlan. After listening to the first book in her Calendar Girl series, January and then I continued the series read with the next 5 books in the series (and i’m part-way through #6 right now). They aren’t too substantial or require too much thought – but were the perfect brain candy for the other weekend when I was in a bit of a reading funk.

Books I’m looking forward to in March
Devil in Spring – Lisa Kleypas – ok, so I know I listed this one in February, but my copy of it just came in at the library – so I finally get to read it!
Salt to the Sea – Ruta Sepetys – I’ve had this book on Mt TBR for a while – but added bonus was that it was nominated for an Audie – so now I have more incentive to listen to it. I loved her previous historical fiction that I read (Between Shades of Grey)
Silver Stars – Michael Grant – this is book 2 in a WW2 YA alternate history I read a few months ago where the twist on history is that women were required to sign up for the draft following a Supreme Court decision. I just picked this one up at the library the other day – and was uber excited to see that the dedication page was to the first two women to pass the US Army Ranger training (Capt. Kristen Geist and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver).

Here’s to a solid reading month in March!

A Month in Reading – January 2017

january

I always mean to do an end of month summary for my reading but to be honest, i’m never actually organized enough to get it done…so this is new for me – but its one of my blogging resolutions for 2017. I’m finding it hard to believe that it is the end of January already – I mean, this month flew by! On the non-blogging front – I started a new job (yay) – but have been extremely busy (boo!) which is reflected in both my reading and my blogging. But without further-ado, a look back on January.

Total Books Read in January: 18
Total Books Listened to in January: 7

crossing-heartsFirst Book of the Year:
Crossing Hearts – Kimberly Kincaid

simply-sexualLongest on TBR:

scythe
Longest Book

Eleventh Grave in Moonlight – Darynda Jones – Urban Fantasy
The Valiant – Lesley Livingston – Young Adult/Historical Fiction (umm, female gladiator – yes please!)
Devil in Spring – Lisa Kleypas – Historical Romance

Overall, I read less books this month than I typically do, but I had some solid reads and several new authors I can’t wait to read more by in the near future.

How about you – how was your January reading escapades?

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (9 Jan)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

fire-and-iceHappy Second Monday of 2017! I spent the last week participating in Bout of Books 18 (hosted by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal) and while I didn’t hit my reading reading goals (just a tad over 400pgs and I was hoping to hit at least 750pgs), I had a huge number of hours listened to during the course of the week (over 25 to be exact). I also listened to my first re-read in a long while (typically i’m not a re-reader, but a reading challenge required a book that I had read previously). And while I only finished reading 1 books – it was a book that I bought off Amazon in 2009 (and which I dug out of my archives) – so i’m slowly working on my reducing Mt TBR goal.

blood-shotThis week marks the start of a new job (which I’m excited about), but also the fact that I’m going to be back having a longer commute each day – which means, drum roll please…more audiobook listening time (yeah, I’m not excited at all…haha!) My goal for this week is to tackle a few of the books that I have in progress, since that number is starting to creep up (I normally have multiple books in progress, but its starting to get a bit wacky with my number right now). Another goal is to also make progress on at least one of the many challenges that I have in progress (likely the Scattergories challenge in the Goodreads group – Pick A Shelf – because I only have 3 books and 1 audiobook to listen to in order to finish the January iteration of it). Focusing on this challenge will also let me knock at least 1 book of Mt TBR.

Currently Reading:
Sarah’s Key
The Coffee Girl
The Gift
Then He Showed Up
Fly with Me – read 111pgs

Currently Listening:
What Stands In A Storm
In The Company of S1herlock Holmes

What about you – what are you reading today?

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading?

Happy first Monday of 2017 – here’s hoping that the year finds everyone with lots of new books to read, new authors to try and old favorites to fall back on!

One of my goals for 2017 is to be a more consistent blogger – I’m aiming for at least 12 reviews a month, including a couple of audiobook ones, as well as 4 blogging posts (kind of like this one). I also need to be better at planning posts for reviews, so that I’m not writing them on the day they are supposed to go live (yeah, I did that a few times last year!). My other non-blogging related goal is to make sure that when I buy kindle books that I log them onto my shelves on Goodreads! I just spent the last couple of days logging 3 years worth of purchases (and I’m still not done yet). Yes, I read a lot, but most of those picks were based on books I had listed on my Goodreads and not other ones that I owned. According to my shelving, I bought 420 books from Amazon in 2016, and only read like 15 of them (out of the 350 odd books that I read). (This also means that I should apologize to any Goodreads friends who may have had me spam the heck out of their feed the last few days as I was shelving books).

crossing-hearts-pictureNow onto what am I reading…in true fashion, I spent most of yesterday in bed reading and finished up my first book of the year – Crossing Hearts by Kimberly Kincaid – I won this in a giveaway on her Facebook author page and wow! My review will go up closer to the book’s release date (Feb 7, 2016). Now, I’m digging into some older books that are in my kindle archive – several of which I’ve owned since the first year I bought my kindle (2008/09)…Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay and Fire and Ice by Liz Andrews.

promises-in-deathOn the audiobook side of the house – i’m still slowly chugging away at Les Miserables (you can anticipate seeing this update for the next couple of months). For context, Valjean and Cosette are currently on the run from Javert and have just found themselves in the Convent in Paris. I am also listening to Promises in Death by JD Robb (and all I can saw is Morris 😦 ). One of my goals this year is to listen to at least one of the In Death books a month – which will put me in the high 30’s range by the end of the year (not quite caught up but getting there). When I finish up Promises in Death, I’m going to jump over to the next book in Sara Paretsky’s V.I. Warshawski series, with Blood Shot.

Stay tuned for my first Bout of Books 18 post that will be going live soon and have a great first Monday of the year!

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (26 Dec)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

I’ve been really horrible about blogging over the last few months – I realize it, do a few posts to get “up to date” and then promptly lapse back into oblivion. Its part of the reason why I’ve been carefully pondering my word for 2017 (as part of Sheila @ Book Journey’s Word of the Year). so I do know that one of my goals for 2017 is to be a more consistent blogger – both with these weekly status updates, but also getting reviews posted in a more timely manner. But onto my current reading shenanigans…

I spent the last couple of days deep in a binge read of Catherine Bybee’s Not Quite series – thanks to Kindle Unlimited, I was able to read all of these as part of my monthly subscription. They are like candy to me – I keep reading them and don’t want to stop – very similar to my candy eating approach. Now I’m kind of up in the air on what series I’m going to read next…so if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

lesmisOn a audiobook front, I’m alternating between three different books to include my third attempt at Les Miserables – I swear one of these days I am going to finish this book! I’m alternating my listening of Les Miserables, with The Poisoner’s Handbook – which is all about the development of forensic chemistry in the 1920’s and different ways that poison’s that killed people (either through murder or incidental causes) were identified and how it influenced the overall body of medical examinations and death investigations. And while at work, I’m listening to the next book in JD Robb’s In Death series – Promises in Death – i’m only a couple of hours into it, but I’ve seriously teared up a few times.

playing-the-partOn my kindle – i’m working my way through my normal wide variety of books – I’m on a pretty solid contemporary romance kick right now. I’ve had both Sea Glass Sunrise (Donna Kauffman) and Half Moon Hill (Toni Blake) chosen for me as part of a reading challenge based on the board game, Monopoly. I also started Playing the Part (Robin Covington) this afternoon as a quick read – double bonus since Robin is a local author for me to read.

In other news, I’m still trying to figure out what my first book of 2017 will be so that I can get that blog post prepped and i’m making plans for Bout of Books 18 which will be held in the first week in January.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy Holidays
