It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (9 Oct)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

So obviously from my lack of blog posts in the last two months, I’ve been busy as all get out – its been peak triathlon training season and in my ultimate wisdom, I also signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon (2 weeks to go – yikes – what the heck was I thinking!!!) On top of all my training shenanigans, work in general has been busy – so in the ultimate sacrifice, reading (or at least a reduction in reading) and blogging had to be sacrificed! But never you fear – I’m getting back into the swing of things and hope to have more frequent posting in the next couple of weeks 🙂

Now on to the fun stuff! I have the day off work today (thank you DoD) which could be a good thing – between my last longish training on Friday (15 miles at an 11:40 page) and then volunteering at Ironman Maryland (if you ever want to see insane athletes – these guys – yes i’m one of them – cover 140.6 miles in no more than 17hrs – 2.4mile swim, 112 miles on the bike and then a marathon), I am rather stiff and sore (for lack of a better word) – so curling up in bed today sounds like a great idea (but its wet and drizzly out which helps the desire to be a sloth).

My reading this past week can be described as sexy electrician, quilting friends, matchmaking moose and irish police procedural binge read. For the most part it was a fairly successful reading week, although, i’ll admit, while I have enjoyed other books in the Elm Creek Quilts series – the characters have been noticeably more annoying to me in recent reads/listens.

Currently Reading:
So I discovered Irish author Graham Masterton a few months ago when I picked up #7 in his Katie Maguire series from my local library. It hit the spot in the dark and torturous column (something I see a lot of in the Nordic Noir mysteries) and so have proceeded to binge read the first 4 books in the series – and getting ready to start book 5. I also have no doubt, if I finish up Blood Sisters this week, that I will roll into book 6 (Buried).

Along with Blood Sisters, I also have a couple of ARC’s from authors to read and review – Freeing the Beast (Tina Donahue) and Pupcakes (Annie England Noblin). I’ve read stuff by Tina Donahue before and found myself needing to fan my face because of the steaminess of the writing. This is a re-release of a book published a few years ago by Samhain (speaking of, I used to read tons of their books, how did I not discover her before this year!!!). Annie England Noblin is a new author to me, but i’ll admit to being a sucker for the dog on the cover (even if i’m not a huge pug fan in general…). Here’s hoping I enjoy Pupcakes and find a new author to add to my repitoire.

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (9 Jan)

fire-and-iceHappy Second Monday of 2017! I spent the last week participating in Bout of Books 18 (hosted by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal) and while I didn’t hit my reading reading goals (just a tad over 400pgs and I was hoping to hit at least 750pgs), I had a huge number of hours listened to during the course of the week (over 25 to be exact). I also listened to my first re-read in a long while (typically i’m not a re-reader, but a reading challenge required a book that I had read previously). And while I only finished reading 1 books – it was a book that I bought off Amazon in 2009 (and which I dug out of my archives) – so i’m slowly working on my reducing Mt TBR goal.

blood-shotThis week marks the start of a new job (which I’m excited about), but also the fact that I’m going to be back having a longer commute each day – which means, drum roll please…more audiobook listening time (yeah, I’m not excited at all…haha!) My goal for this week is to tackle a few of the books that I have in progress, since that number is starting to creep up (I normally have multiple books in progress, but its starting to get a bit wacky with my number right now). Another goal is to also make progress on at least one of the many challenges that I have in progress (likely the Scattergories challenge in the Goodreads group – Pick A Shelf – because I only have 3 books and 1 audiobook to listen to in order to finish the January iteration of it). Focusing on this challenge will also let me knock at least 1 book of Mt TBR.

Currently Reading:
Sarah’s Key
The Coffee Girl
The Gift
Then He Showed Up
Fly with Me – read 111pgs

Currently Listening:
What Stands In A Storm
In The Company of S1herlock Holmes

What about you – what are you reading today?

Happy first Monday of 2017 – here’s hoping that the year finds everyone with lots of new books to read, new authors to try and old favorites to fall back on!

One of my goals for 2017 is to be a more consistent blogger – I’m aiming for at least 12 reviews a month, including a couple of audiobook ones, as well as 4 blogging posts (kind of like this one). I also need to be better at planning posts for reviews, so that I’m not writing them on the day they are supposed to go live (yeah, I did that a few times last year!). My other non-blogging related goal is to make sure that when I buy kindle books that I log them onto my shelves on Goodreads! I just spent the last couple of days logging 3 years worth of purchases (and I’m still not done yet). Yes, I read a lot, but most of those picks were based on books I had listed on my Goodreads and not other ones that I owned. According to my shelving, I bought 420 books from Amazon in 2016, and only read like 15 of them (out of the 350 odd books that I read). (This also means that I should apologize to any Goodreads friends who may have had me spam the heck out of their feed the last few days as I was shelving books).

crossing-hearts-pictureNow onto what am I reading…in true fashion, I spent most of yesterday in bed reading and finished up my first book of the year – Crossing Hearts by Kimberly Kincaid – I won this in a giveaway on her Facebook author page and wow! My review will go up closer to the book’s release date (Feb 7, 2016). Now, I’m digging into some older books that are in my kindle archive – several of which I’ve owned since the first year I bought my kindle (2008/09)…Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay and Fire and Ice by Liz Andrews.

promises-in-deathOn the audiobook side of the house – i’m still slowly chugging away at Les Miserables (you can anticipate seeing this update for the next couple of months). For context, Valjean and Cosette are currently on the run from Javert and have just found themselves in the Convent in Paris. I am also listening to Promises in Death by JD Robb (and all I can saw is Morris 😦 ). One of my goals this year is to listen to at least one of the In Death books a month – which will put me in the high 30’s range by the end of the year (not quite caught up but getting there). When I finish up Promises in Death, I’m going to jump over to the next book in Sara Paretsky’s V.I. Warshawski series, with Blood Shot.

Stay tuned for my first Bout of Books 18 post that will be going live soon and have a great first Monday of the year!

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (26 Dec)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

I’ve been really horrible about blogging over the last few months – I realize it, do a few posts to get “up to date” and then promptly lapse back into oblivion. Its part of the reason why I’ve been carefully pondering my word for 2017 (as part of Sheila @ Book Journey’s Word of the Year). so I do know that one of my goals for 2017 is to be a more consistent blogger – both with these weekly status updates, but also getting reviews posted in a more timely manner. But onto my current reading shenanigans…

I spent the last couple of days deep in a binge read of Catherine Bybee’s Not Quite series – thanks to Kindle Unlimited, I was able to read all of these as part of my monthly subscription. They are like candy to me – I keep reading them and don’t want to stop – very similar to my candy eating approach. Now I’m kind of up in the air on what series I’m going to read next…so if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

lesmisOn a audiobook front, I’m alternating between three different books to include my third attempt at Les Miserables – I swear one of these days I am going to finish this book! I’m alternating my listening of Les Miserables, with The Poisoner’s Handbook – which is all about the development of forensic chemistry in the 1920’s and different ways that poison’s that killed people (either through murder or incidental causes) were identified and how it influenced the overall body of medical examinations and death investigations. And while at work, I’m listening to the next book in JD Robb’s In Death series – Promises in Death – i’m only a couple of hours into it, but I’ve seriously teared up a few times.

playing-the-partOn my kindle – i’m working my way through my normal wide variety of books – I’m on a pretty solid contemporary romance kick right now. I’ve had both Sea Glass Sunrise (Donna Kauffman) and Half Moon Hill (Toni Blake) chosen for me as part of a reading challenge based on the board game, Monopoly. I also started Playing the Part (Robin Covington) this afternoon as a quick read – double bonus since Robin is a local author for me to read.

In other news, I’m still trying to figure out what my first book of 2017 will be so that I can get that blog post prepped and i’m making plans for Bout of Books 18 which will be held in the first week in January.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy Holidays

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (24 October)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

I feel like I just spent a good portion of the weekend blogging because I participated in the semi-annual Dewey’s 24 hour Read-A-Thon on Saturday (we started at 8am and it finished 8am on Sunday). While I’ve pseudo participated in the past, this was the first RAT that I was actively trying to read as much as possible and as long as possible. Aside from a 2hr nap in the afternoon and then a short doze around 6:45 (for 20ish minutes), I read (or listened to audio) pretty much the rest of the time. Ultimately, I finished 9 books (3 of which were significantly in progress; 1 which I had read a chapter of and the other 5 were complete reads) – these 9 books resulted in 2583pgs being read (to include the 3 books that I still have in progress). I also listened to 239 minutes (so nearly 4 hours) of my current audiobook (this worked great while I was out running errands, or when I was updating my blog every couple of hours). So I was uber-proud of my participation and hope to beat it in April when the next read-a-thon rolls around.

I’m honestly not sure how much reading i’ll get done this weekend as I prep for my last race of the season (or at least that’s what I’m telling myself)…for some reason, I thought it would be a great idea to run the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday, only 3 weeks after doing my Ironman…all I can say is, in the singing of Dirks Bentley…”what was I thinking?

Currently/Planned Reading:
I finished up Dewey’s Read-A-Thon with 3 books in progress – so my goal this week is to finish them up. I also have an ARC of a new contemporary romance that is due the first week of November, so i’m hoping to get that read this week. I do have my normal variety of genres that are in progress (I mean, I have to keep things interesting right?). The list as it currently stands (subject to any random whims of reading) is: Malicious Intent – I’m about 35% of the way through this right now – i was hoping to get it read during the Read-a-thon but it wasn’t completely keeping my interest (aka, I needed something lighter to read at 4am this morning). I also have Surfacing (Siri Lindley) – an autobiography (I had hoped to get this read last week, but real life got in the way) and The Curse of Tenth Grave (the newest book in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones – this came in for me at the library and I need to get it read and returned).

24oct-books

Currently/Planned Listening:
I have a shade over 3hrs left in Lothaire currently (thank to the nearly 4 hours I listened to during the read-a-thon, as well as going to dinner with friends and having a bit of a drive to get there. So I should finish it up either today or tomorrow (figuring a 2-3 hour commute which is the norm for a Monday). Once I finish with it, then i’m going to tackle 2 audiobooks at once – one a mystery/thriller (The Grave Tattoo, by Val McDermid) and the other, the final in the MaddAddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood (science fiction/dystopia).

What about you- how does your last (full) week in October look for reading and listening?

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (17 Oct)

Blink and you miss it, because in case you didn’t know, we’re now half-way through October…and as someone posted recently on facebook (in true Will Ferrell in Elf style), it’ll be Christmas in 10 weeks…yikes! This week marks a new milestone for me – I’m starting a new job after being on military orders for the last year (as a weekend warrior, I had the option of taking various forms of military orders and had a great year doing that) but its time to go back to the real world (oh and I forgot the joy of having to figure out what I’m going to wear and now having a uniform to default too…

I’m slowly but surely plugging away on my yearly reading challenge (hosted by Goodreads) – I got a bit behind when I had a reading slump a few months ago, but i’m chipping away a book at time (and trying to not fall into the tendency to read a bunch of shorties to make up the difference). My reading goals right now are simple – try to knock down the amount of books on my currently reading list (I think at one stage it was at 20+…books that I had started and gotten distracted reading and just never removed); and try to read the various books that i’ve borrowed via Kindle Unlimited that have been sitting for a while unread.

Currently Reading:
17oct

I have my typical multiple books going at once – what can I say? I’m looking forward to starting Surfacing, which is a memoir by Siri Lindley – who the triathlon for many of world’s top athletes including Mirinda Carfare (i totally have a girl crush on Rinny). I dug into my Kindle archives with Texas Hold Him (Lisa Cooke) which I bought back in 2009. The other 4 books are from my Kindle Unlimited subscription – 2 are series that I found and continuing (the Trudi Jay Magic Carnival series and Alison Kent’s Hope Springs series) and then 2 first in series (although I’m kind of cheating because I read book 2 by Crystal Bowling already).

Currently Listening:
oct-17-audiobooks

On the currently listening pile, I am almost done with the first book in the Department Q series (The Keeper of Lost Causes) – the reveal of who the key suspect is has just occurred and I have about 3 hours left. I’m alternating The Keeper of Lost Causes with Lothaire (Kresley Cole) – although my ipod touch decided to hate me and I lost where I was in the book when I had to reset the app…but it should be fairly easy to figure out again. I’m also listening to The September Society by Charles Finch (which is kind of confusing because the main character is Charles Lenox…)

Anyways that is my meandering What Am I reading this middle week of October…

What about you – what are you reading?

so I promised at the end of August (jeez, has it been 2 weeks already) – that I was going to try and do better about being more consistent with blog posts – and what better way to do that, than the do a weekly meme about what are you reading? I’ve participated in It’s Monday, what are you reading? on and off through the years – and its always a good way to just capture my thoughts on different books that i have in progress…so without further ado…

Currently Reading:
Like always, I have a variety of books that are currently in progress – some are on my kindle, some are in print and others are in audiobook. I know of describe it as a reader’s version of ADD (also know as multiple book syndrome).

what-are-you-reading-19-sept

I have (at least) 6 books that are currently in reading progress – from a non-fiction about mental endurance when it comes to endurance thoughts – because seriously, my brain decided to screw with me every time I do a long distance race (and my review of the book when I post it will focus more on that); to a cult classic of Peyton Place (also known as the book that shocked the nation); to a new author I discovered via Kindle Unlimited (Alison Kent). Pretty much all of the books that I am currently reading are related to different reading challenges that I am currently participating in – which is probably what makes my reading choices seem so bi-polar at times.

My book ADD is continuing with my audiobook choices – normally, I only have 1 book going at once, but for some reason, while I’m enjoying the books i’m listening to, I have a short attention span right now.

audiobooks-sep-19

I think its safe to say, after listening to the first 2 CD’s (and a bit) of Grunt that I now know more about genital reconstruction than I ever wanted to know – but that honestly doesn’t surprise me because where her brain goes in these books honestly scares me at times. I’m also alternating between book 2 in Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy – about a world where corporations reign supreme and genetic engineering is taken for granted; and Dark Skye, book 15 in Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series. It’ll be interesting to see how I balance listening to the three of these over the next week – haha!

What about you – what is on the reading pile for this upcoming week?
