It’s Monday – What Are You Reading?

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

Happy first Monday of 2017 – here’s hoping that the year finds everyone with lots of new books to read, new authors to try and old favorites to fall back on!

One of my goals for 2017 is to be a more consistent blogger – I’m aiming for at least 12 reviews a month, including a couple of audiobook ones, as well as 4 blogging posts (kind of like this one). I also need to be better at planning posts for reviews, so that I’m not writing them on the day they are supposed to go live (yeah, I did that a few times last year!). My other non-blogging related goal is to make sure that when I buy kindle books that I log them onto my shelves on Goodreads! I just spent the last couple of days logging 3 years worth of purchases (and I’m still not done yet). Yes, I read a lot, but most of those picks were based on books I had listed on my Goodreads and not other ones that I owned. According to my shelving, I bought 420 books from Amazon in 2016, and only read like 15 of them (out of the 350 odd books that I read). (This also means that I should apologize to any Goodreads friends who may have had me spam the heck out of their feed the last few days as I was shelving books).

crossing-hearts-pictureNow onto what am I reading…in true fashion, I spent most of yesterday in bed reading and finished up my first book of the year – Crossing Hearts by Kimberly Kincaid – I won this in a giveaway on her Facebook author page and wow! My review will go up closer to the book’s release date (Feb 7, 2016). Now, I’m digging into some older books that are in my kindle archive – several of which I’ve owned since the first year I bought my kindle (2008/09)…Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay and Fire and Ice by Liz Andrews.

promises-in-deathOn the audiobook side of the house – i’m still slowly chugging away at Les Miserables (you can anticipate seeing this update for the next couple of months). For context, Valjean and Cosette are currently on the run from Javert and have just found themselves in the Convent in Paris. I am also listening to Promises in Death by JD Robb (and all I can saw is Morris 😦 ). One of my goals this year is to listen to at least one of the In Death books a month – which will put me in the high 30’s range by the end of the year (not quite caught up but getting there). When I finish up Promises in Death, I’m going to jump over to the next book in Sara Paretsky’s V.I. Warshawski series, with Blood Shot.

Stay tuned for my first Bout of Books 18 post that will be going live soon and have a great first Monday of the year!

2017 – First Book of the Year

first-book-of-the-year

What is First Book of the year?
The First Book is a book that maybe you have been wanting to read for a while but have not had time for, a coveted book, an old favorite re-read – whatever you want.  The point is that this is the book that will kick off the year for you.  What will it be?

crossing-heartsMy First Book of 2017
Last year it took my ages to try and figure out what my first book of 2016 was going to be (I think that I changed my mind 4 or 5 times), but this year when I was looking at my various books to read, it was a no brainer…so drum roll please…my first book of 2017 is going to be Crossing Hearts written by the fabulous Kimberly Kincaid! If you took a look at the book information for Crossing Hearts, you’ll notice that the official release date isn’t until early February – but I luckily won an ARC of it in a giveaway on Kimberly’s facebook page (there was some serious happy dancing when she tagged me in the post as the winner announcement).

Crossing Hearts Description:
Hunter Cross has no regrets. Having left his football prospects behind the day he graduated high school, he’s happy to carry out his legacy on his family’s farm in the foothills of the Shenandoah. But when a shoulder injury puts him face-to-face with the high school sweetheart who abandoned town—and him—twelve years ago, Hunter’s simple life gets a lot more complicated.

Emerson Montgomery has secrets. Refusing to divulge why she left her job as a hotshot physical therapist for a pro football team, she struggles to readjust to life in the hometown she left behind. The more time she spends with Hunter, the more Emerson finds herself wanting to trust him with the diagnosis of MS that has turned her world upside down.

But revealing secrets comes with a price. Can Hunter and Emerson rekindle their past love? Or will the realities of the present—and the trust that goes with them—burn that bridge for good?<

Bout of Books 18 – Intro

bout-of-books-18

Nothing like kicking off a new year of reading with a low-key Bout of Books reading event! But what is Bout of Books, you ask? Well, here’s the Official Description

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 2nd and runs through Sunday, January 8th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 18 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I’ve participated in Bout of Books on and off over the last couple of years – mostly because I don’t always see the posts mentioning upcoming dates and as mentioned in other blog posts, I’m horribly disorganized…so one of my goals this year is to participate in these reading events more frequently and interact with more bloggers! so i’m looking forward to kicking Reading in 2017 off with a bang! who is going to join me?

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (26 Dec)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

I’ve been really horrible about blogging over the last few months – I realize it, do a few posts to get “up to date” and then promptly lapse back into oblivion. Its part of the reason why I’ve been carefully pondering my word for 2017 (as part of Sheila @ Book Journey’s Word of the Year). so I do know that one of my goals for 2017 is to be a more consistent blogger – both with these weekly status updates, but also getting reviews posted in a more timely manner. But onto my current reading shenanigans…

I spent the last couple of days deep in a binge read of Catherine Bybee’s Not Quite series – thanks to Kindle Unlimited, I was able to read all of these as part of my monthly subscription. They are like candy to me – I keep reading them and don’t want to stop – very similar to my candy eating approach. Now I’m kind of up in the air on what series I’m going to read next…so if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

lesmisOn a audiobook front, I’m alternating between three different books to include my third attempt at Les Miserables – I swear one of these days I am going to finish this book! I’m alternating my listening of Les Miserables, with The Poisoner’s Handbook – which is all about the development of forensic chemistry in the 1920’s and different ways that poison’s that killed people (either through murder or incidental causes) were identified and how it influenced the overall body of medical examinations and death investigations. And while at work, I’m listening to the next book in JD Robb’s In Death series – Promises in Death – i’m only a couple of hours into it, but I’ve seriously teared up a few times.

playing-the-partOn my kindle – i’m working my way through my normal wide variety of books – I’m on a pretty solid contemporary romance kick right now. I’ve had both Sea Glass Sunrise (Donna Kauffman) and Half Moon Hill (Toni Blake) chosen for me as part of a reading challenge based on the board game, Monopoly. I also started Playing the Part (Robin Covington) this afternoon as a quick read – double bonus since Robin is a local author for me to read.

In other news, I’m still trying to figure out what my first book of 2017 will be so that I can get that blog post prepped and i’m making plans for Bout of Books 18 which will be held in the first week in January.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy Holidays

Review – Dirty Like Me – Jaine Diamond

dirty-like-meDirty Like Me
Author: Jaine Diamond
Series: #1 in the Dirty series
Rating: ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Review Copy Provided by the Author

Description:
Struggling barista Katie Bloom doesn’t even know who Jesse Mayes is until she inadvertently wins the coveted role of sex kitten in his hot new music video. But by the time she’s in bed with him, she knows his reputation.

Love maker. Heartbreaker.

Making out with a stranger in front of a camera crew isn’t how Katie imagined herself getting over a broken heart, but when Jesse touches her, sparks fly. The sex is fake but the chemistry is real, and soon the steamy video is blazing up the charts.

Then Jesse makes Katie an irresistible offer: act as his girlfriend for six weeks while he promotes his new album. The only catch? Their sizzling make-out sessions will be for the cameras only.

Which is fine with Katie, since she’s not about to trust her heart to rock’s most legendary lover. Her body? Maybe…

Review:
It seemed kind of like fate that the same day I started reading Dirty Like Me, that I saw the facebook video featuring auditions for the live show of Magic Mike…trust me when I say this video is worth your time…Magic Mike Live Audition YouTube or Magic Mike Live on the Ellen Show. Anyways, when I picked up Dirty Like Me, I had some great visuals in my head after I read the opening (and found myself fanning my face a bit because it definitely got a bit steamy in the car where I was reading).

So early on in the book, not only was I drooling over the cover (because just look at it), I had a solid visual of Jesse and Katie’s first(ish) meeting and it was a relationship of convenience…yeah, I knew I was either going to have a great reading experience or I’d eat my hat (or is it cover, since I was in uniform while I was reading?) One of the things that drew me to Katie early on was that she was independent but at the same time, wasn’t afraid to ask for help if she needed it (and had a solid family support system too). It was something that was slightly different from many of my recent reads when characters have needed help but were too stubborn to ask for it.

To say that the hotness of Dirty Like Me was chartable would be a lie…there were so many times when the chemistry between Katie and Jesse was like a volcanic explosion. But the smexy scenes (both the UST build-up and the actual scenes themselves) weren’t overdone and felt natural (and not forced or overpowering the rest of the story). Not only that, but the whole traveling with the band portion of the story was well done – there was drama but wasn’t drama for drama sake! If you are in the mood for a rock-star romance with the right touch of smexyness and unresolved sexual tension, then Dirty Like Me might be a book for you.

Review – Wild Zone – Skye Jordan

wild-zoneWild Zone
Author: Skye Jordan
Series: #4 in the Rough Riders Hockey series
Rating: ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Review Copy Provided by Author

Description:
Tate “The Saint” Donovan’s jaded outlook really makes him more of a devil’s advocate. Ever since he discovered his ex-wife doing more in their bedroom than rooting for the home team, he’s given up on finding The One. In fact, he’s given up on finding Any One. So he isn’t surprised when his teammate’s engagement party is one mishap away from going up in flames—until a sexy, free spirit whisks in from Paris and drags the party from the fire. She’s whimsical, wild, and oh so wrong, but her breezy, freestyle attitude makes her utterly irresistible. Tate’s halo slips. He takes a walk on the wild side. And discovers wrong has never felt so right.

With big plans on the horizon, Olivia’s laissez faire attitude toward men is a perfect pairing. She’s drawn to Tate’s wounded soul, and the protective warrior beneath his brooding mask intrigues her…right into bed. Olivia quickly realizes the possessive passion he brings to the bedroom is like nothing she’s ever experienced, and her feelings for Tate turns her take-it-or-leave-it style love life on its head.

With her return to Paris imminent and his grueling hockey season approaching, Olivia and Tate must face the possibility that they are destined to be nothing more than star-crossed lovers.

Review:
I can probably count on one hand the number of times that I have binge read a series (and by binge read, I mean, reading all the available books in the series within about a week and a half time), but I did just that with Skye Jordan’s Rough Rider’s Hockey series. I randomly grabbed the first book in the series from Kindle Unlimited when I was looking for something non-sci-fi (because I had been on a huge alien/sci-fi reading binge) and I had read a couple of her books before and decided what the heck. The first book was great for breaking up the monotony of my daily metro ride the work (yay DC metro that breaks down on a regular basis) and I quickly read the next two books in the series. Then to my great surprise, I received a review request from Skye to read the fourth book in the series (and I totally jumped on the opportunity).

While I loved all the books in the series, Wild Zone was probably the most emotional read for me. I’ll admit to not always being a fan of love (or lust) at first sight romance tropes, but for some reason, it worked for me in Wild Zone. I loved Tate and Olivia (Liv) from the first mistaken meeting to the roller-coaster of their relationship. But Wild Zone was so much more than just a romance – the family dynamics that existed within Liv’s family (between her, her sister and her mother) just made me so sad and frustrated at the same time. I spent a good portion of the book hating her mother (and that didn’t resolve itself with the end of the book) – even though I had an idea of what was going to happen with her family, I was praying that I was going to be wrong. But alas, I wasn’t…I debated actually throwing my kindle at one stage (but I didn’t because my precious 🙂 )

The quick blooming romance between Tate and Liv, even with all the drama from her family, hit my happy buttons. Especially, since having seen him in previous books and how he had been screwed over by his ex-wife…I just wanted him to find his HEA. They just played well of each other – you could tell that Liv needed to find her home again and while she hadn’t expected to find that with Tate, that was what he was to her. And seeing Tate’s interactions not only with his teammates, but with various kids throughout the story just gave me warm and fuzzies. Through-out this series, I’ve loved how Ms Jordan hasn’t shyed away from including children as supporting characters.

I gave Wild Zone a solid 4 stars and kind of hope that she’ll write some more books in this series – not only because it features my hometown(ish) of Washington DC, but just because I love her writing style for this series so much.

Review – Worth the Risk – Jamie Beck

worth-the-riskWorth the Risk
Author: Jamie Beck
Series: #3 in the St James series
Rating: ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Review Copy Provided by Publisher

Description:
When Jackson St. James decided that six weeks in Vermont’s Green Mountains would help him get his life together, he didn’t anticipate replacing his craving for whiskey with a craving for his alluring new landlord, Gabby. Now, instead of prioritizing his sobriety and the resolution of the lawsuit threatening his business, he’s making excuses to spend time with the spunky young landscaper whose candor is more than a little addictive.

Gabby Bouchard refuses to let her pill-popping mother and unreliable baby daddy turn her into a cynic, so she doesn’t fight her attraction to her enigmatic new tenant. Although Jackson’s smile rarely reaches his eyes, his generosity and dependability make her willing to overlook his demons. But once she convinces him to give in to temptation, Gabby’s jealous ex threatens to disrupt the life she has built for herself and her son.

With so much at stake, Gabby and Jackson must decide if love is worth the risk.

Review:
While Jamie Beck is a new to me author (on the reading front), I had previously come across her books in my recommendations on Amazon (I had just never quite jumped on the opportunity…which basically means, I’m an idiot!) – so when I was approached by a publicist to participate in a book tour for her new release, I jumped on the opportunity. Coincidently, my plan to read Worth the Risk, also fell on the same weekend as a planned 24 hour read-a-thon and knowing that I would likely need something compelling in the early hours of the morning, I held onto the book until then. And boy, it didn’t disappoint…I can safely say that it got me through the early hours of the morning (somewhere between 3 and 4am) when all I wanted to do was curl up and take a nap.

Its hard to decide where to begin in writing this review – from the total cover love that I had (I mean, I would love to live in a place with scenery like that) to the vivid descriptions of Vermont to the interactions between Gabby, Jackson, her father and her son…this book was just the whole package. As a reader, I enjoyed how the author tackled the topics of drug addiction and alcoholism – it made the characters seem more real because it showed how flawed people can be and still find love – rather than the need to be perfect. It just goes to show that sometimes love is worth the risk – what does it take to be willing to step off that cliff and fall in love with someone who may have a dark past, or potentially a dark future? the risk to stick your neck out after being hurt and to try again? every day of life is a risk – small or large and its the risk that we take that let’s us live the lives we that we do…but anyways, let’s get away from the philosophical musings…

Before I had even finished Worth the Risk, I had logged onto amazon and using my trusty Kindle Unlimited subscription – had borrowed the previous books in the St James series (now to find time to read them in the near future)…I also (as soon as it was a sane hour for facebooking people), told one of my friends that she needed to pick up a Jamie Beck book if she hadn’t already. So that is my advice to you – if you like contemporary romance with wit and humor, that is smexy without being too overboard – then Worth the Risk might be the book for you – but you can’t be afraid of darker, more honest themes.

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (24 October)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

I feel like I just spent a good portion of the weekend blogging because I participated in the semi-annual Dewey’s 24 hour Read-A-Thon on Saturday (we started at 8am and it finished 8am on Sunday). While I’ve pseudo participated in the past, this was the first RAT that I was actively trying to read as much as possible and as long as possible. Aside from a 2hr nap in the afternoon and then a short doze around 6:45 (for 20ish minutes), I read (or listened to audio) pretty much the rest of the time. Ultimately, I finished 9 books (3 of which were significantly in progress; 1 which I had read a chapter of and the other 5 were complete reads) – these 9 books resulted in 2583pgs being read (to include the 3 books that I still have in progress). I also listened to 239 minutes (so nearly 4 hours) of my current audiobook (this worked great while I was out running errands, or when I was updating my blog every couple of hours). So I was uber-proud of my participation and hope to beat it in April when the next read-a-thon rolls around.

I’m honestly not sure how much reading i’ll get done this weekend as I prep for my last race of the season (or at least that’s what I’m telling myself)…for some reason, I thought it would be a great idea to run the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday, only 3 weeks after doing my Ironman…all I can say is, in the singing of Dirks Bentley…”what was I thinking?

Currently/Planned Reading:
I finished up Dewey’s Read-A-Thon with 3 books in progress – so my goal this week is to finish them up. I also have an ARC of a new contemporary romance that is due the first week of November, so i’m hoping to get that read this week. I do have my normal variety of genres that are in progress (I mean, I have to keep things interesting right?). The list as it currently stands (subject to any random whims of reading) is: Malicious Intent – I’m about 35% of the way through this right now – i was hoping to get it read during the Read-a-thon but it wasn’t completely keeping my interest (aka, I needed something lighter to read at 4am this morning). I also have Surfacing (Siri Lindley) – an autobiography (I had hoped to get this read last week, but real life got in the way) and The Curse of Tenth Grave (the newest book in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones – this came in for me at the library and I need to get it read and returned).

24oct-books

Currently/Planned Listening:
I have a shade over 3hrs left in Lothaire currently (thank to the nearly 4 hours I listened to during the read-a-thon, as well as going to dinner with friends and having a bit of a drive to get there. So I should finish it up either today or tomorrow (figuring a 2-3 hour commute which is the norm for a Monday). Once I finish with it, then i’m going to tackle 2 audiobooks at once – one a mystery/thriller (The Grave Tattoo, by Val McDermid) and the other, the final in the MaddAddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood (science fiction/dystopia).

24-oct-audio

What about you- how does your last (full) week in October look for reading and listening?

Dewey’s 24hr Read-A-Thon – Hours 21-24

dewey2-2015Hours 21-24 Update

I DID IT! well, almost…aside from my unplanned nap this afternoon (pretty much all i remember was reading and then I was out of it) and a slight doze around 6:45 (maybe 15 min or so) – I read or listened to books for the entire day. I honestly never thought I’d be able to do that, but I guess if there is a will (and lots of coffee, chocolate and soda), there is a way! I had a great time participating and can’t wait for the April one to roll around – my goal is to try and do with NO naps – so we’ll see 😉

I’m going to post more of a summary post tomorrow when I do my “It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?” update; but here is the end of event survey – so you guys can see how much fun I had (and decide if you want to play along in April when the next one is held!)

End of Event Survey
Which hour was most daunting for you? I think end of hour 22 and 23 were the hardest for me – so the 6:45 to 7:15am time period…I’m actually normally up then (since I get up at 4:45 most days) – but the being awake and not being asleep kicked my ass. I think I dozed off for a few minutes here and there towards the end.
Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? I didn’t have any of them this time, since I’m waiting on his new book to be released but Matt Reilly’s military thriller books would be great read-a-thon reads because they are literally a continual roller-coaster. Unfortunately, I likely won’t get my hands on his new book until Christmas and will probably have it read before the April read-a-thon and i’m not a re-reader (or very rarely am I a re-reader)
Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season? I wanted to cheer people on more, but found the mobile version of the website, where the participations were listed to be really hard to use – I couldn’t easily access the table on my phone which was how I did the majority of my cheering/participation (aside from my periodic blog posts).
What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? Last time i did the read-a-thon, I tried to update every hour, but I was spending more time updating than reading; this time I opted for every 2 hours (most of the time) and even had some 4 hour updates. i think the 4 hour updates worked the best for me and that’s probably what I’ll use next time
How many books did you read? I finished 9 books during the read-a-thon; 3 of them I had read portions of prior to starting and a 4th, I had read a chapter of the night before; 5 of them were completely new during the read-a-thon
What were the names of the books you read?
Why Do You Say It? – Webb Garrison – non fiction
A House Without Windows – Nadia Hashimi – cultural fiction
The Sweetness of Honey – Alison Kent – women’s lit/romance
Rescued – Stephanie St. Klaire – romantic suspense
Sweet Possession – Maya Banks – erotic romance
All About Seduction – Katy Madison – historical romance
Perfectly Ms Matched – Tamra Baumann – contemp romance
Worth the Risk – Jamie Beck – contemp romance
Welcoming the Bad Boy – Annie Rains – contemp romance
Which book did you enjoy most? It took me a while to get into it, but I ended up enjoying A House Without Windows; as well as Worth the Risk.
Which did you enjoy least? Rescued – it had really high ratings on Goodreads but just didn’t work for me.
How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? heck yeah, i’ll be back in April 🙂
What role would you be likely to take next time? I think I’d like to cheer lead a bit more and maybe come up with a mini-challenge – but folks are so creative with the ones that were posted that I don’t know if i could do the same…

Dewey’s 24Hr Read-A-Thon – Hours 17-20

dewey2-2015Hours 17-20 Update

So i opted to not do an update at the 18hour point because I hadn’t finished any books in the preceding two hours (although I had made some pretty significant headway) – but I have good news to report now, I just finished (like maybe 5 minutes ago) – the one book that I had made it a goal to finish during this Read-a-thon – A House Without Windows – written by Nadia Hashimi.

house-without-windowsI read one of Dr Hashimi’s books a few months ago (she is a pediatrician that works in DC), and so when I was looking at the list of authors who would be attending the National Book Festival in DC and saw her name on the list – I thought it was a good opportunity to read another of hers. Set in Afghanistan, A House Without Windows is a book with the main thrust of the story is the criminal case surrounding an Afghani woman accused of killing her husband and the Afghani born, US trained lawyer who is hired to defend her. Before the beginning of the readathon, I’d read about 100 pages of it, so I was hoping to be able to finish it – but realized quickly that it wasn’t going to be a book that I could easily binge read – it was one that was better read in segments throughout the day (in fact, I just had just finished reading a part of it when I took my unanticipated nap this afternoon). I’ll be posting a review later on, but I can safely say, this was a 4 star read for me and one of my favorite of the read-a-thon.

As well as finishing up this book, I started yet another one by a new to me author, Annie Rains – Welcoming the Bad Boy – which I picked up on Amazon the other day during a sale (thank you book bub for letting me know about it being on sale!) I also started reading an autobiography of one of the top triathlon coaches in the US, Surfacing by Siri Lindley – I haven’t gotten far into it yet, in fact, barely touched on her athletic potential and she definately had a lot of drama in her family life, so I’ll be interested to see where it goes.

marie-readathonThe Final Stretch:
My next blog update will be at 8am and the completion of the read-a-thon – when I’ll do a summary of everything that I read and listened to over the previous 24 hours. But my goal for these next 4 hours is to finish up at least 1 of the 3 books that I’m currently reading and then hopefully for my last push, read The Curse of Tenth Grave which is the book I’ve been keeping off to the side as my reward for doing well during the Readathon!
