First Lines Friday – 20 October 2017

First Line Friday’s is a weekly feature, hosted by Hoarding Books – so grab a book off your pile and share the first line

Running With a Sweet Talker – Jami Albright

A few months ago, I borrowed a book from Amazon Kindle Unlimited called Running from the Rock Star. What I didn’t know at the time was a) how much I was going to enjoy it and b) that the author would end up on my auto-buy list PDQ (pretty darn quick). There was something fresh about her writing, which was very needed as a run of a few less than stellar reads. So when I got an email from her a couple weeks ago, asking if I wanted to review the next book in the series – i’m pretty sure my response was something that went, not only yes, but heck yeah (or maybe gimme gimme gimme). With Dewey Read-a-thon this week (although I’m not fully participating), Running with a Sweet Talker is on the top of my to-read pile.

Audiobook Review – Stalking Jack the Ripper – Kerri Maniscalco

Stalking Jack the Ripper
Author: Kerri Maniscalco
Series: #1 in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series
Rating: ☆ ☆ ☆

Audiobook Narrator: Nicola Barber
Run Time: 9hrs, 26min
Audiobook Rating: ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Description:
Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord’s daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father’s wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle’s laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

Review:
I have to admit that the premise of Stalking Jack the Ripper intrigued me, but I was a bit disappointed with how it all played out. I liked the idea of a female practicing forensic medicine in this time era – since it was so not done. But Audrey Rose as a character was horribly annoying and for someone as skilled as she was supposed to be in understanding people and crimes, also naïve. Now I will say that Thomas Creswell will definitely described as being eye (and most definitely ear candy).

The historical aspect of the story was fun and I liked how the author took portions of the real history about Jack the Ripper and his victim’s to make the story more believable. There was a pretty substantial author’s note at the end went into some more detail about why she opted to cover the parts that she did. But when considering both the character development and the historical aspects of the story – the historical definitely won out over the actual characters in the story. I did like how the author tied the story up at the end, so there were no open ends…but don’t worry – I won’t tell you guys what happened because that would ruin all the fun 🙂

Nicola Barber isn’t a new narrator to me (although I’m totally blanking on what else I’ve listened to her narrate right now) and I enjoyed Stalking Jack the Ripper more than I may have if I had read it. I found that she had a solid range of voices that fit all the different characters from the naïve young girl, to the hot forensic science student to Audrey Rose’s cantankerous old father. I never had any moments where I had to stop and think about what character was speaking at a given time. In fact, I found myself hoping for some traffic on my commute home (yeah, I should probably burn in hell for that), so I could listen to a bit more. While I wanted to slap Audrey Rose upside the head, at least the narration was solid.

I’m kind of conflicted if I will read (or most likely listen) to the second book when it comes out – I kind of what to and yet, if Audrey Rose is as naïve in the next one, I just don’t know…

Random Reads Rebooted – February 2017

Random Reads Rebooted

Random Reads was a blog feature that used to be hosted by the blog, I’m Loving Books, however, it is no longer active (at least that I can fid). Random Reads Rebooted is a reimaged version of this and I hope you will join me.

I don’t know about you guys, but I have a bad habit of buying books and then forgetting about them…I’m like a squirrel storing away its nuts for winter, except I do it with books. Random Reads Rebooted is dedicated to finding (and reading) those books that have long been forgotten about it.

On the first Saturday of the month (or within that first week), randomly select a book that is on your bookshelves (it could be a virtual shelf like a Goodreads one, or a real shelf that you have someone randomly numbered). I recommend using random.org to help you pick that special or forgotten book. At the end of the month, come back and let us know what you thought about the book that you picked.

January Review
ok, so I feel like a bit of a slacker because mid-month I hit an epic reading slump (and honestly i’m still digging my way out of it) and i’m still slowly working on my book. I’m about 15% of the way through and enjoying it though. The cultural mesh between traditional Indian and New Jersey culture is making for an intriguing read.

guns-will-keep-us-together February Pick
Even though I have slacked on my January read – I am going to go ahead and pick a book for my February read. Continuing with my plan from last month, this month, I’m picking a book from my Amazon 2010 purchases shelf (which currently has 270 books on it). After sorting the books by title alphabetically, random.org gave me 96 – which correlated to Guns Will Keep Us Together, by Leslie Langtry.

Purchase Date: September 15, 2010

Description:
Dakota Bombay prided himself on his blonde Bond image. Then his life gets both shaken and stirred by an irate grandmother demanding a marketing plan for the family assassination business, a six-year-old son Dak never knew he had, and a mysterious redhead who’s erased his decades-old preference for blondes

Good Reads for a Good Cause

Good Reads for a Good Cause
Hot on Ice Blog Tour

cover4b-1A word about the anthology from contributor Kimberly Kincaid!

Hello, romance readers! I cannot even tell you how excited I am to tell you all about HOT ON ICE: A Hockey Romance Anthology (18 hot hockey romances! How can you go wrong?) and my story in the collection, which is titled DEEP CHECK. 20% of our royalties will be going to Homes For Our Troops, and I couldn’t be happier or more humbled to donate to such an incredible organization. Homes For Our Troops mission is to support severely injured veterans (post 9/11) by building mortgage-free and specially adapted homes for them and their families so they can focus on rebuilding their lives.

DEEP CHECK is a steamy second chance love story between hotshot hockey center, Finn Donnelly, and feisty firehouse administrator, January Sinclair. Finn wants nothing more than to bring the Cup to his best friend’s grave after the team’s victory—but going back to his hometown also means seeing January, a.k.a. the woman he left behind. Finn and January’s sizzling reunion is not only part of the HOT ON ICE anthology, but it’s a story set in my edgy, sexy Station Seventeen series, where hot firefighters and cops come together to keep their city safe. Many of the characters in this series bring their military backgrounds to the firehouse, where my DEEP CHECK heroine, January, has deep ties.

Like firefighters and first responders, the veterans helped by Homes For Our Troops made the choice to serve and protect those around them at all costs, even when those costs were grave. Being part of a project that supports these veterans as they focus on recovery, family, and rebuilding their lives was a driving force in my choice to participate in HOT ON ICE. I hope you enjoy the stories!

Over the following summer, each player gets to keep the Cup for a day. Nobody knows why, but whoever has the Cup falls in love. TBR Tuesday – 17 January 2017

TBR Tuesday
TBR Tuesday is an opportunity to you to find and read those lost gems that might be hidden on your TBR shelves! In order to be eligible for TBR Tuesday a book should have been on your TBR pile for more than a year (so any book purchased prior to January 2016 is fair game right now. Let me know what book you read, how long it has been lost on your TBR pile and what you thought of it? Is it a hidden gem or a dusty throwaway or somewhere in between…

Simply Sexual – Kate Pearce
Bought: February 9. 2009
Time of TBR: 2899 days

Review:
Another week, another book on Mt TBR and another book that was only so-so…I’ve heard good things about this author in the past and unfortunately, Simply Sexual just didn’t live up to my hopes for it. It was an ok book, don’t get me wrong – I gave it 3 stars, but it was good, but it wasn’t great. I think my biggest issue was that while Valetin’s backstory was interesting – it didn’t draw me in like it could have – while I felt detached like I think I was supposed to, I wanted more – it was just ehh…the scenes between Valentin and Sara were steamy in places but the rest of the book just mediocre at best…hidden gem Simply Sexual was not…but I’ll keep digging through the pile for that diamond in the rough

Bout of Books 18 – Intro

bout-of-books-18

Nothing like kicking off a new year of reading with a low-key Bout of Books reading event! But what is Bout of Books, you ask? Well, here’s the Official Description

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 2nd and runs through Sunday, January 8th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 18 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I’ve participated in Bout of Books on and off over the last couple of years – mostly because I don’t always see the posts mentioning upcoming dates and as mentioned in other blog posts, I’m horribly disorganized…so one of my goals this year is to participate in these reading events more frequently and interact with more bloggers! so i’m looking forward to kicking Reading in 2017 off with a bang! who is going to join me?

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (26 Sep)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

I don’t know about you, but i really feel like this year is just flying by and that it was just Monday a couple of days ago…unfortunately, I can tell you (based on how my body currently feels) that that isn’t the case. Last week wasn’t a solid reading week for a number of reasons, the most important being that it was my last big training week prior to my Ironman triathlon in 2 weeks. So this week consisted of a 20 mile run (yeah, you read that right)…as well as a 4000yd swim and a race day sim (3k swim, 6hr bike and 5 mile run)…so i’m pretty much hobbling around right now and I barely made it to bed before i passed out most nights.

What I finished reading/listening to:

sep-19-read

Last week i finished listening to 1 audiobook and finished up 3 books (1 print from the library, 1 ebook from the library and 1 borrowed via Kindle Unlimited). While I enjoyed listening to Grunt and it was interesting to see how many of the technologies I take for granted in my daily work (since I am in the military) were developed, it wasn’t as enjoyable as some of her previous ones. Bonk is still my favorite by her of all the ones i’ve listened to. Of the 3 books that I finished reading, I was pretty much unenthused by them – they all had potential but in the end was just left feeling blah – which is always disappointing…

What Am I Listening To Now?

audiobooks-sep-26

Keeping with the theme of multiple audiobooks – i’m still listening to two of the books that I mentioned last week – mostly because Grunt (the one audiobook I managed to finish last week) was due back on Thursday and I needed to finish it up. And in keeping with the theme of books needing to be returned – after waiting close to 2 months, the audiobook of The Dirt on Ninth Grave came in and with a waitlist for it, I knew I had to get it listened to sooner rather than later – so I’m about halfway through right now and will probably finish up early in the week and then will concentrate on finishing up my other 2 books.

What Am I Reading This Week?

26-sep-reading

A couple of my books this week are carried over from last week and then I have a batch of books just borrowed via KU that I’m going to try and read. I’m most looking forward to reading Harlot by Victoria Dahl because i’m in the mood for a (hopefully) good historical romance and with a fallen woman as the heroine – I hope its as good as it sounds. I’m also going to check out Terri Osborn – who is an author that several Goodreads friends of mine have recommended over the last couple of years but I just haven’t had a chance to get to her yet. I also found out that one of the books I finished up this past week, has a second book in the series just released last week (Perfectly Ms Matched) – so I’m going to check that one out too.

How About You – what is on your reading pile this week?

Wow…that was a long break…

Sooo….I really didn’t intend to have upwards of 6 weeks of silence here. I know that I’ve had periods like that in the past when real life has gotten in the way of reading and blogging (HOW DARE IT RIGHT?) but I’ve at least tried to check in…but for some reason this time I didn’t.

It wasn’t that I haven’t been reading (I have) or listening to audiobooks (boy have I ever), or even that I haven’t read/listened to any books that deserve reviews (I have several of them half written)…I just…I don’t know…lack of energy and excitement over blogging. The feeling of same ‘ole, same ‘ole – a touch of a reading rut (I’ve definately moved away from my normal heavy romance reading because everything is starting to read the same).

Add to that, a currently insane workload (having to do the work of at least 3 others because we are undermanned) and training for my second Ironman (Louisville on October 9th) and pretty much anything that isn’t work or triathlon related has been moved to the backburner. But never fear – I will be back – I might be a bit sporadic until after October, but I’m going to try and chisel my way into my backlog of books that I have to review…wish me luck!

Review – Anthology – Burning Bright

burning brightTitle: Burning Bright – Four Chanukah Love Stories
Authors: Megan Hart, KK Hendin, Stacey Agdern, Jennifer Gracen
Rating: ☆ ☆ ☆ ½

Description:
This December, take a break from dreidel spinning, gelt winning, and latke eating to experience the joy of Chanukah. When you fall in love during the Festival of Lights, the world burns a whole lot brighter.

It’s definitely not love at first sight for Amanda and her cute but mysterious new neighbor, Ben. Can a Chanukah miracle show them that getting off on the wrong foot doesn’t mean they can’t walk the same road?

Lawyers in love, Shari Cohen and Evan Sonntag are happy together. But in a moment of doubt, he pushes her away—then soon realizes he made a huge mistake. To win her back, it might take something like a Chanukah miracle.

When impulsive interior designer Molly Baker-Stein barges into Jon Adelman’s apartment and his life intent on planning the best Chanukah party their building has ever seen, neither expects that together they just might discover a Home for Chanukah.

All Tamar expected from her Israel vacation was time to hang out with one of her besties and to act like a tourist, cheesy t-shirt and all, in her two favorite cities. She definitely was not expecting to fall for Avi, a handsome soldier who’s more than she ever dreamed.

Review:
Sometimes I love when random books pop up in my feed as recommendations. This year, Burning Bright was one of them that I came across and since it focused on Chanukah, and since I can’t remember ever reading any books with that as a basis, I’m glad i decided to take the plunge. And as always with anthologies, I love discovering new authors – in the case of Burning Bright, the only author I had previously read was Megan Hart.

Burning Bright consisted of 4 stories, all with a different take on Chanukah – although for me, my two favorites were the first one, written by Megan Hart and the last one written by KK Hendin. The other day (at least to me) were only so-so and I didn’t really enjoy them – so i’m going to quickly review my two least favorite ones first, before I talk about my favorite ones. I think i’m going to refer to the Megan Hart and KK Hendin contributions as bookends – i seem to always end up using favorite authors as bookends on my shelves, and it is the case with this anthology 😉

Fundamentally, there was nothing really wrong with the stories by Stacey Agdern, Jennifer Gracen – they were well-written, they just personally didn’t appeal to my reading asthetic. In a Dose of Gelt (Jennifer Gracen), we meet Shari and Evan, both lawyers who work at the same firm and in love. my problem was that I typically struggle with stories where the main couple is already in a relationship with each other – although there are often interesting dynamics, they just leave me feeling empty – I like the newness of figuring out a relationship (even though second chance romances where they couple is NOT together is a favorite trope of mine). That being said, Evan did do some serious grovelling – I just didn’t like the whole premise and how it was executed. The same could be said for A Home for Chanukah (Stacey Agdern) – the premise itself was interesting, but I struggled with the continual head-hopping throughout. It wasn’t just a simple back and forth POV each chapter, but rather multiple times in each chapter – one saving grace was that each POV was labelled, so at least there was that consistency.

My two favorites in the anthology were Miracle (Megan Hart) and All I Got (KK Hardin) – there was something brutally raw about both of these that just drew me to them. in Miracle, we got to experience Ben’s separation from his family and not being in the safety zone that his religion had previously provided – finding himself in a world that is less strict that where he came from. I really enjoyed this one because it was raw and emotional, but at the same time, I learnt some new stuff. And then there was KK Hardin’s contribution, All I Got which probably fell more into the new adult realm, since the main character was engaged in education. But when she falls in love on a trip to Israel (which is also on my bucket list of places i would love to visit one day), she discovered just how small the world truly is.

As always with an anthology, I was left with wanting to potentially read more books by the authors and look forward to good reads in the future. Overall, I gave the anthology 3.5 stars with 2 books getting 4 stars and 2 getting 3.

National Young Reader’s Day – 10 November 2015

young readers appreciation day

Image Credit: Phillip Teacher, HUFS Language Institute

I’m always amazed at when I see people post about different days of recognition – because so often they are ones that I have never heard of. Case in point: the second Tuesday of every November is National Young Reader’s Day. According to Holidays Insights, this day was co-founded in 1989 by Pizza Hut and Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. While it is referred to as a National day, there have been no actual presidential proclamation making it so (would be a nice thought though right?). According to the creators, National Young Reader’s Day is “… a special day to recognize the joys and benefits of reading.”

As a book blogger, reading has always held a special place in my heart. It was something that I loved from an early age and that my parents instilled the love of in me. I remember sitting on the couch most nights reading a chapter book with my mom (most vivid is the Chronicles of Narnia). And as i grew older, I continued reading and still do to this day. So it hurts my heart when I hear young children and teenagers say that they hate reading. I can’t even imagine hating reading. Without reading I never would have been introduced to the lands of Narnia or going on a journey with the Hobbits. I never would have thought I found friends with the girls in the Babysitters Club (or the Babysitter’s Little Sister) or fallen in love with Jamie Fraser (Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander). Reading has been such an integral part of my life over the last three plus decades and I can’t wait to see what reading has in store for me over the next three (or four, or hopefully more).

For all my reader’s out there:
What books from your childhood influenced your love of reading the most?

If you could give ONE book to a child today, what would it be and why?
