Washington Romance Writers – Reader Luncheon

washington romance writers

So a couple of months ago my friend Jen (more commonly referred to as my old man from our days at Virginia Tech), asked me if I wanted to go to a reader/blogger luncheon that was being held in DC. An author friend of hers, the fabulous Jamie Farrell, that I have read and reviewed here was going to be attending, along with about 40 other authors. Pretty sure I gave her a look that said, are you really asking me this, of course I want to go…lol! So yesterday (Saturday) we headed out to Bethesda and spent the afternoon hanging out with some great authors, meeting lots of new folks and adding to the TBR pile (in massive ways).

lynne kimberly 2The event was hosted by the fabulously dressed (down to the awesome Zebra-stripped shoes – that I debated tackling her for) Kimberly Kincaid and Lynne Silver. I’d read Kimberly’s stuff before (in the The Sugar Cookie Sweetheart Swap – which also featured a story by Kate Angell with anatomically correct gingerbread men…). Lynne is a new author to me, but when I saw that the promo card for her book, Desperate Match had mad libs on the back, I was in love and will be reading her in the near future.

jamie jen deeThen came the all important introduction! While I have read all of Jamie Farrell’s books so far (and loved them) and we’ve been facebook friends for over a year – we’ve never actually met! (I know, weird right). Jen and I were lucky enough to be sitting at Jamie’s table, so we were able to chat all afternoon and I finally heard the hilarious story about how they met. Its like something you would think only happens in books 😉 For anyone who hasn’t read Jamie’s stuff, she writes contemporary romance with a southern twist – and bonus, she is a military wife (even if it is air force 😉 ).

picnic swagAlong with Jamie, we had Geri Krotow who writes military romances for Harlequin (and is just moving into suspense) – and she is a former Naval Officer (so she knows her stuff) and Hope Ramsey. Both of these authors are new to me (although I know I have at least one of Hope’s books on Mt TBR). Hope was also the fabulous designer of our picnic baskets that everyone at our table received. Aren’t they gorgeous!

Also at our table was Rheanna who is a blogger at Cammo Style Love – so it was like a military fest at our table most of the afternoon. As well as raffle prize central – I mean, a reader luncheon isn’t complete withour prizes right.

kensington books 2Speaking of prizes, I always have to laugh how things workout. I was just sitting back, chilling, making jokes (like always) when they were doing one of the groups of raffle prizes. Kimberly Kincaid got up with this HUGE bag of books, donated by her publisher, Kensington Books. Laughing, I turned to Jen and said, OMG, I want to win that – I mean, what girl doesn’t love a bag of books…and voila! yep, yours truly had her name drawn out of the bag. I think there was like a stunned silence for a moment or two, before it finally sunk in. kensington books 1The bag was like a cornucopia of books – there are so many authors in there, some i am familiar with, but most of them are new to me. a few people at my table got donations from me for books that I had already read – I figured the prize was a gift that keeps on giving 😉

avery meAfter all the prizes were given out (and there were some seriously great ones) and we had sufficiently gorged ourselves on food (that butternut raviloi was melt in your mouth delicious), it was time for the best part – mingling with authors! I always love doing this because it gives me a chance to gush over authors I love and meet new ones who may have books I want to try. I FINALLY got to meet Avery Flynn – i’ve read several of her books and they are all highly rated (bonus, my ARC of her newest one popped into my email while i was at the luncheon). So we totally had to take a selfie (courtesy of her). jen random authorJen and Mary Behre (Paranormal Mysteries/Suspense) bonded over their mutual love for the color purple (i swear, they are just attracted to each other!). I got a pen in the shape of a rifle courtesy of P.A. DePaul and tons of other swag.

TRAK jaceAnd saving the best for last, the cardboard cut-out of Jensen Ackles from Supernatural. Now, I’m probably going to shock people, but I’ve never actually watched this although it often shows up in my Facebook feed – but I think i’ll need to check it out in the future. Jensen is seen here with Kimberly Kincaid, Robin Covington Tracy Brogan, and Avery Flynn.

I left the luncheon with plenty of swag and books, so for a chance to win a goodie bag – if you could have lunch with any author ALIVE today, who would it be and why?

Seriously Saturday Series Catch-Up – Update #4

series catch-up

Ok, I swear while my updates on this have been rather sketchy, I have been reading books on my list. I just took a look and out of the 29 that I had on my originally list, I’ve read 17 of them. So i’m probably a bit behind in the reading, but still have time to finish (maybe/hopefully). Anyways, I’m going to try and actually post my updates over the next couple of weeks to get caught up. But here is the first of several 😉

visiosn in deathVisions in Death – J.D. Robb – #19 in series
I always find it hard to believe that a series could still be going strong over 15+ books, but the In Death series is one of them. While my goal isn’t to get caught up on this series this year (since there are 36 books out), I wanted to at least make sure that I finished up a couple more. The thing I liked about Visions in Death was that you got to see a more human side of Eve – early on in the series, she seems so cold and mechanical, but as each book is released, you see who she really is. The mystery in this installment was intriguing, I only had it partially figured out by the time it was revealed in the book but there wasn’t anything earth-shattering around it – the whole taking the eyes from the victim was kinda cool (in a freaky way though). Lots of quotes that I enjoyed and laughed over – one of my favorites being: “I’m late,” she snapped before Summerset could speak. “But here’s the thing, I’m not always late, but you’re always ugly. Who’s got the real problem?” (the whole Eve/Summerset dynamic is one of my favorite things about the series). Overall, I gave this entry in the series 3.5 stars and will be continuing on.

this is who i amThis Is Who I Am – Cherise Sinclair – #7 in series
Since I started this series and he was introduced, I wanted to read Sam’s story – for some reason, he has been the most intriguing (aside from Sally and the FBI agents) of all the Dom’s in the series. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the other guys, but there is something about an author that can write a convincing sadist (and make me like him) that wants happy. And Ms Sinclair didn’t let me down. I thought she did a great job tying up the story-arc from the previous 3 books of a human trafficking ring and showed people who have been involved try to get back to their normal life. I also thought that she made an interesting story with having secondary characters who weren’t aware of Linda’s preferences and when finding out, their reaction – which I think would be more common in society, than people just accepting. I gave This Is Who I Am 4 stars and can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out.

helsinki bloodHelsinki Blood – James Thompson – #4 in series
I’m kind of disappointed that I didn’t hold off reading this book now, since there is only going to be 1 more book in the series, after the authors death a few months ago. While the third book in the series was like a 180 in the character of Kari Vaara, this book started to turn him back into the cop that I liked in the first 2 books. While it was still dark in places, so much more of the book was devoted to Kari getting his life back to how it was. While I wanted to slap his wife upside the head a few times, for the most part – it was a solid read. Unfortunately, the wait for the release of book 5 is dwindling down and then there will be no more Kari 😦 I gave Helsinki Blood 3.5, but rounded up to 4 on Goodreads.

flash and bonesFlash and Bones – Kathy Reichs – #14 in series
After the disappointment of Spider Bones, I was leery of how Flash and Bones would turn out – I was thinking that the series may have jumped the shark and while I didn’t love F&B it was a def. improvement. But it is on my monitor and follow pile – just going to be taking it one book at a time. you could tell that the author felt in her element with the NASCAR descriptions – while personally, i’m not a fan, you could tell that she had done her research. I liked the mystery around this one, it reminded me more of the earlier books in the series – and it had Reichs trade-mark gruesome deaths of secondary characters. I gave Flash and Bones 3.5 stars, and will continue the series, but in no rush to do so.

Dewey Read-A-Thon Summary

deweys-24-hour-readathon-2013-hour-1-L-w0BS33

So when I passed out at 11pm last night, I figured I would do my norm and wake up in a few hours and read…normally, I’m a fairly disjointed sleeper…but would you know…I didn’t move all night…when I finally cracked the eyelids (no thanks in part to my German Shepherd bouncing on the bed because he had to go out)…it wasn’t 4am, or 5am, but 6:30…that is by far the longest i’ve slept in, I don’t know how long. But I decided to try and maybe squeeze in a little bit more reading before the 8am cut-off…tried being the operative word…within about 20 minutes the head was nodding again and I decided that obviously, I still hadn’t gotten enough sleep, rolled over and dozed off…oh wells!

Now to the End of Event Meme:

Which hour was most daunting for you?
I think i made it to about hour 15 before I started dozing off, so somewhere in there 😉
Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
Unfortunately, I didn’t really have any blow my mind kind of reads this time – mostly because I was trying to finish up some books that had been languishing on the currently reading pile…and they were languishing because for some reason or another, they were just not catching my attention
Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
Nope – not off the top of my head
What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?
I liked what I saw of the mini-challenges although I didn’t actually particiate and that I did have a couple of cheerleader’s check in, even though I signed up right before it started
How many books did you read?
I finished 4 books, 3 of which were in progress when I started
What were the names of the books you read?
Helsinki Blood – James Thompson – mystery set in Finland
Moonlight On My Mind – Jennifer McQuistion – historical romance
Strange Bird – Anna Jansson – Mystery set in Sweden
Love Irresistibly – Julie James – contemporary romance
nearly finished (within about 15%) – Ink – Amanda Sun – YA set in Japan
Which book did you enjoy most?
Strange Bird – the whole idea of an artificial bird flu were intriguing
Which did you enjoy least?
I struggled with Ink – I liked it, but because it was a pdf converted ebook, the formatting was a bit funky that made it hard to read
How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
sign me up – i’ll be there with bells on, and hopefully less conflicts 😉 I might consider doing a mini-challenging, or signing up to be a cheerleader – not sure though

Dewey’s Read-A-Thon Update #5 (2000-2300)

deweys-24-hour-readathon-2013-hour-1-L-w0BS33

Posting a few minutes early because my eyes are starting to droops…which means, I’m going to cave and take a nap 😉 Not sure how much I actually read this last set of three hours (time wise) – between finishing up my mid-point post, feeding and referring the dogs dinner (it always sounds like an epic battle) and realizing that I needed to run the dishwasher…

Anyways, I did read Love Irresistibly – Julie James. I know that it wasn’t one of the books I was reading during my last update, but I grabbed it while I was waiting for my cheese sticks to cook and got sucked in. Julie James is a comfort read for me – I like her snarky humor and the way the stories just flow. I’m guessing that it probably took me about an hour and a half to read or so.

Update Time Read: 1 hr 30 min

Dewey’s Read-A-Thon Update #4 – Mid-Point!

deweys-24-hour-readathon-2013-hour-1-L-w0BS33

Halfway there! Whoo-Hoo! Although, i will admit that my reading has been a bit spotty for the most part – I did finally get a semi-decent reading set in this update – my longest in a 3 hour period to date. I finished up Strange Bird – Anna Jansson which I mentioned in my last update. For the most part, the ending lived up to the rest of the book, I’ll be interested to see where the series goes in the future – but since this is the only book in the series out of the 14 that have been published that is available in English, me thinks I’ll be waiting a while…

And with the completion of Strange Bird, I met my goal of finishing at least 3 books that I had in progress at the start of the Read-A-Thon, which meant that I got to pick a new book (or two) to read. Doing a quick scrounge, below is a picture of some of the books on my upcoming TBR pile…

pile of books

And by using my magic trick of random selection – I grabbed Orphanage of Miracles – Amy Neftzger which is a Children’s/YA Fantasy about kids in a orphange that are tasked with creating miracles and another young girl on a quest to find one – I have a feeling there is going to be a huge moral to the story, but we’ll see. I also grabbed For the Love of Pete – Julia Harper (who also writes under the name Elizabeth Hoyt) – which is a contemporary romance with an FBI agent…mostly cheesy, but we’ll see…

Update Time Read: 1 hr 38 min 59 sec
Update Time Listened: 00:00 (its raining out)
Update Pages Read: 332

Total Time Reading to Date: 3hr 56min 02secs
Total Time Listening to Date: 1 hr 5 min 48 secs
Total Pages Read So Far: 752

Food Consumed: Nothing! Apparently i need to rectify that!

Now onto the Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now?
Orphanage of Miracles; For the Love of Pete and Ink
2. How many books have you read so far?
Finished 3 I had in progress prior to the read-a-thon and 5 more currently in progress (including 2 new ones)
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
Ellen Hopkin’s Impulse came in for me at the library the other day (free verse poetry) so that is going to be up next and also The Steady Running of the Hour which i saw as a featured book on Goodreads and reserved at the library
4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?
I had all kinds of plans to get up early and workout and avoid running errands…unfortunately life happened…I tried…in October when I’m not training for any triathlons, I’ll hopefully have more time/less interruptions
5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
Most interruptions have had to do with errands that needed to be run. But I listened to my audiobook while driving around, and made sure to have my kindle in my purse, in case I had a few minutes here and there.
6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
I seem to be reading slower here than i do normally…more conscious of time maybe?
7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
This is my first one, so not right now
8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?
Sign-up more than 24 hours in advance 😉
9. Are you getting tired yet?
yep – I may take a cat nap in this next section, i’m not sure though.
10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?
I alternate books – so i’ll read 3 chapters of one, and then 2 of another – but they typically have to be completely different genres – right now contemp romance, children’s fantasy, YA coming of age

Dewey Read-A-Thon Update #3 (1400-1700)

deweys-24-hour-readathon-2013-hour-1-L-w0BS33

So i’m getting more productive on my reading each block of 3 hours, but i haven’t yet quite got it flowing how I want. And of course, it doesn’t help that I decided to go and get a pedicure – but I did take my kindle with me and while I read most of the time, I did start to doze off a bit – so while my reading times were ok, my page count, probably not as much. lol.

For the last 3 hours, I focused on 2 more books on my in progress pile. The good thing is, once I finish these, I have met my goal of finishing 3-4 of them, and can start something new – yay!

In the last three hours, I read 74 pages of Ink – Amanda Sun. This has been loitering on the TBR pile for a while, but i’m really enjoying it – its a YA set in Japan with mythological elements (the Kami – who can bring drawings to life). I also read 90 pages of Strange Bird – Anna Jansson (translated by Paul Norlan) which is about a bird flu pandemic hitting a small island is Sweden. This author is the featured author in one of my Goodreads groups for the month and I’m enjoying it and will be looking for more by her in the future.

Dewey Read-A-Thon Update #2 (1100-1400)

deweys-24-hour-readathon-2013-hour-1-L-w0BS33

My last three hours has been much more productive (at least on the reading front) than my first three. Whee! Although, I still had some errands to run, including a trip to the post office (blech!)

I managed to finish up two of the books that I had in progress – Moonlight On My Mind – Jennifer McQuiston – which I started at 62% on my kindle – which was equivalent to about pg 238 and finished it up – Pages Read: 146. I also finished up Helsinki Blood – James Thompson – which I started at pg 196 to the end – Pages Read: 110. My total time for reading of those two books was 1:09:34 and I managed to listen to another 23:18 of my audiobook.

Total Time Reading to Date: 1 hr 9 min 34 secs
Total Time Listening to Date: 40 min 18 secs
Total Pages Read So Far: 256

Food Consumed: 3 chocolate chip cookies and a cheese danish from Starbucks (when I ran out to go to the post office quickly).

Dewey Read-A-Thon Update #1 (0800-1100)

deweys-24-hour-readathon-2013-hour-1-L-w0BS33

You know what they say about best laid plans right…they are going to never actually work out. So my plan for the morning had been get up at 4am and knock out my workout (2.5 bike ride and then a 3 mile run for the triathlon i’m training for). That would get me done around 7 am and give me time to relax a little before kicking off Dewey at 0800. Of course, when my alarm went off at 4am, I realized that the trail I was going to ride, isn’t open until sunrise (6:20), so what did I do…I rolled over and went back to sleep. So I didn’t start my ride until 7:20…

Fast forward to 11:00 for my first update and I’ve listened to….wait for it….a sum total of 15 minutes of the audiobook that I have in progress on my drive home.

Hopefully, this isn’t how the rest of the day is shaping up to be…but on that note, I’m going to throw some toaster pastries in the toaster, grab a quick shower to de-stink slightly and hit my next 3 hour block running (hopefully).

In the audiobook realm, I am currently listening to Dreams of Gods and Monsters – Laini Taylor – although, I know I won’t get it finished during the read-a-thon

Dewey Read-A-Thon Introduction

deweys-24-hour-readathon-2013-hour-1-L-w0BS33

So this is my first official year of participating in Dewey’s Read-A-Thon even though, I’ve heard about it before. And per my norm, I’m signing up at the last minute (like less than 24 hours before it starts)…haha! So my thoughts for my intro right now are probably a bit scattered, but I’ll try to get them down on paper, and then maybe be a bit more coherent in my kick-off post tomorrow am (or as coherent as I can be at 8am on a Saturday, after completing a 2.5 hour bike ride, and then 4 mile run, which I’ll be doing at 4am (ish)).

Goals for the Challenge:
* Last the entire 24 hours – ok, well, I know that probably isn’t going to happen – even in college, I sucked at pulling all-nighters, and I never perfected the art of power-napping – when I’m down, I’m down for the count. So I guess I should make my official goal, somewhere around 20 hours (give or take).

* Finish up at least 3 of the books I currently have in process BEFORE I start any new ones…I’m not sure if this violates any unwritten rules of the challenge about starting fresh, but I have some books that need to be finished, they’ve been staring at me for entirely too long – books/status of each to follow

* Make sure to listen to audiobooks if/when I have to leave the house – hey, even a couple of minutes listening in the car adds to the tally – and I know that I have errands and the like to run – maybe I’ll be lucky enough to hit an hour of listening…we’ll see

* Attempt to not completely live on junk food for the 24 hours (as tempting as it is) – my trainer who designs my workout sessions may kill me – haha (well, she won’t, but I know I’ll regret it when I hit my workout on Sunday).

* Try to find some different places to read, so that I can get out of the house, even for an hour…so far, I have on my list: the Library; Books-A-Million (bonus they have a coffee shop for a break); Starbucks (gotta have my morning coffee); Backyard in the Sun (fingers crossed for nice weather – although this will involve throwing a dirty Frisbee for my dog, who is obsessed); the Nail Salon while I get a Pedicure (hey, its summer and my toes…well, words can’t describe) and last but not least, IHOP (when I need that 2am pick me up…mmm, pancakes and bacon).

Books to be Read:
I’m a very much go with the flow kind of reader, so I don’t really have a pretty stack of planned books to read right now – I currently have 25 books checked out from the library, plus like over 1000 on my kindle (and that is on the low side), so I’m pretty sure I’ll find something to read. I am going to try and be diverse in my genres though, so that I don’t spend 24 hours(ish) just reading romance (although I easily could – lol).

Read-A-Thon Snackage:
Must haves include Hummus with Pita Chips, Hummus with Veggies (carrots, celery, broccoli), Water (and lots of it), Coffee (preferably in IV form), Cheese Sticks (8 minutes oven to plate) and probably some kind of soup or some easy to grab…or throw something in the crockpot before the fun and games start and just eat as needed (ohhh that’s an idea). And how can I forget chocolate and cheese…those are must haves.

Updates:
I’m planning on trying to update every 2-3 hours – but I don’t have any posts prepared or anything like that. I do like that WordPress, that I use for my blog host, has a quick update format that I can post from the app on my phone, so I may make use of that while I am out and about.

Last Thoughts:
Is it time to start yet? I’m soo excited – looking forward to seeing what mini-challenges people have, tweeting away when I need a sanity break and in general, having an excuse to be a bum for a day (like I really need an excuse). And now, I have to go and knock out a 4 mile run before I can continue preps

BYE!
