It’s Monday What Are You Reading?

book date its monday

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme has had various host over the years and I’ve loved checking in with their different blogs – the newest host is Kathryn and The Book Date. I’m looking forward to following her and participating in this meme again πŸ˜‰

It’s kind of weird to think that we are already halfway through the first month of the year. Winter has finally decided to make a pseudo-appearance in the DC area – we had a little bit of snow yesterday (not enough for it to really stick) and its ass-biting cold, so i’m curled up on the couch with some blankets, one of the dogs curled at my feet (no idea where the other one is) and the new season of Hell’s Kitchen going on the TV (I love me some Gordon Ramsey). I have to say that this has probably been the slowest start to reading that I have ever had in a year – its the 18th of the month and I’ve only read 10 books (and that includes 2 audiobooks). I know that seems high for some people, but i’m normally rapidly approaching the 20 book mark by this point of the year. That being said, this past week has been a slight improvement over the first week in the year with several books finished (being sick has def. made it easier to relax and read, rather than doing a million other things in the evenings).

Last Week
dangerous womenMy big success of the week (if you want to call it that) was that I finished my designated “first book of the year.” The book, Dangerous Women, is a short story collection from a bunch of popular authors, all with the theme of dangerous women. Overall, the stories were ok, there were a couple that I really enjoyed, like Diana Gabaldon’s story Virgins (about Jamie and Ian pre-Outlander); as well as Jim Butcher’s installment (part of the Dresden Files series) and Lev Grossman’s. And unfortunately, with any anthology there were ones i just didn’t enjoy, specifically for me, it was George R. R. Martin’s – I’m probably one of the few people who hasn’t read his Game of Thrones series (although I have the entire collection on my kindle), but based on my lack of enjoyment for his short story, I’m honestly in no rush to pick it up.

Goodnight tweetheartThe theme of my reading with several books I finished this week was “left wanting more” – 2 of the books that I finished in the last couple of days (Shimmy for Me and Goodnight Tweetheart), I wanted them to be longer. The romances between the hero/heroine felt too short and not well developed; or in the other case, the story was progressing nicely and then it just ended and I was like WTH…so that was kind of frustrating for me. I know that at least one of the books is a popular book among my friends and for some a DIK (aka a Desert Island Keeper), but for me, it was a mere 3 stars – although it was 4 stars up until the very end when I felt the ending just killed the rest of the story.

Before I GoBut on the other side, I had a couple of strong/enjoyable reads this week, specifically, Before I Go and About a Dragon. Before I Go (Colleen Oakley) is the story of a woman in her late 20’s diagnosed with terminal cancer and her goal to find her husband, someone else before she died. I alternatly cried and laughed during her exploits. I’m looking forward to writing my review of it in the near future. About a Dragon is the second book in G.A. Aiken’s Dragon Kin series – this series is one where I had book 1 loitering on Mt TBR for several years before I actually read it at the end of last year and I’m looking forward to continuing the series.

Currently/Upcoming Reading
when it comes to reading this weekend, I’m like the little engine that could, just chugging along – I’ve been alternating reading, watching TV and the mandatory weekend errands (laundry, grocery shopping etc). But I’ve made good progress and am enjoying the books that I have going right now. I’ve gone back to an old favorite, who I haven’t read in a few years (Sandra Brown), as well as a couple of authors that I discovered in the past year (Pam Jenoff and Marina Adair). Here’s to a great reading week!

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 series I want to start

top ten tuesday

Where to begin…I thought when I took a look at this Top 10, that coming up with 10 series that I REALLY wanted to start would be easy – I could just look through my Goodreads shelves and be done…but of course that wasn’t the case. I had a lot of books that were first in series on them, but when I sat down at thought about it, I wasn’t jumping up and down to read them – which is kind of how I interpreted the “want to start” portion of the question. My other issue is that books that were first in the series that I wanted to start reading, I had either already read a later book (for whatever reason)…so those were also knocked off my list.

Either way, here we go (these are in no particular order for excitment/intention):

a trace of smokeHannah Vogel – Rebecca Cantrell
Book #1 – A Trace of Smoke
A mystery series, featuring crime reporter, Hannah Vogel, set in 1930’s Germany. This series intrigues me because of the time period – I’ve always been interested in the 1930’s and 1940’s, particularly in Europe. I’ve never read any of the authors stand-alone books, but did enjoy the book that she co-wrote with James Rollins.

the coronerJenny Cooper – M.R. Hall
Book #1 – The Coroner
I’m a huge fan of mysteries with a medical basis, so with the main character in the Jenny Cooper series being a coroner, it seems to be right up my alley. Plus, I’m on a bit of a kick of books set in the UK right now.

dragon actuallyDragon Kin – G.A. Aiken
Book #1 – Dragon Actually
Lots of my friends swear by this author (who also writes under the name Shelley Laurenston) and this book has been loitering on the virtual TBR pile for a while – supposedly if you like humorous paranormal romances, she is a go-to author. I’ve found her books under her other name to be a bit hit/miss – sometimes the humor is pitch perfect, other times it feels really forced. But I’m interested in checking this one out.

night falls darklyShadow Guard – Kim Lenox
Book #1 – Night Falls Darkly
I’m always on the lookout for unique paranormal romances – and while I don’t remember when I added this one to my shelf, I occasionally come across it and think that I need to try the series, but then I get distracted. I love the idea of paranormal romance that is set in a historical time period, rather than contemporary.

mind gamesThe Disillusionists – Carolyn Crane
Book #1 – Mind Games
This might be a little bit cheating because its only a trilogy and I technically read the prequel to it in an anthology a couple of years ago, but I recently found my copy of the book when I was tidying up my bookshelves which reminded me that I still needed to read it. Looking forward to digging in soon.

teh restorerGraveyard Queen – Amanda Stevens
#1 – The Restorer
I’ve been told that I HAVE to read this book and its on the TBR pile – I really like the idea of a Graveyard Restorer – it is something that I have never come across in a book series before. I’m looking forward to reading it sometime in the near future.

still lifeChief Inspector Armand Gamache – Louise Penny
Book #1 – Still Life
This is another series where reading friends swear up and down that I need to read – in fact, I’ve had book 1 in audiobook format sitting on the virtual to-listen pile for a while. Although reviews of the most recent book were a bit iffy, so I’m undecided if I want to risk diving into another series that I may end up disliking

return of captain john emmettLaurence Bartram – Elizabeth Speller
#1 – The Return of Captain John Emmett
I’d actually never heard of this series until I randomly came across book 1 while I was browsing the audio books at my local library – but after reading the description – a mystery set in post-WW1 England, I’m intrigued and looking forward to reading it. Plus a friend of mine who is a notoriously hard reviewer gave it 4 stars, which means it must be good

lickStage Dive – Kylie Scott
Book #1 – Lick
This is a series that many of my friends, both on Goodreads and blogs are raving about right now. I will admit that i have a fondness for rock star romances – I love the bad boy trope. But I will admit upfront that I am probably going to read this series out of order, because my library have #3 available to borrow the other day and I grabbed it.

prudenceThe Custard Protocal – Gail Carriger
Book #1 – Prudence
So this series isn’t being released until March next year, but I can’t wait to read it. I loved all the books in the Parasol Protectorate series (even the one that others seemed to hate), as well as the pseudo-prequel books in the Finishing School series.

The only question remaining is: What do I start?
