Wishlist Wednesday – 08 July 15

Wishlist WednesdayWishlist Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Pen to Paper where we post about one book that has been hanging out on our wish list (either for a long time, or not so long)

This week was a relatively easy pick for me to feature – mostly because I just came across a description of the book and based on how I enjoyed a previous book by the author, I knew it was going on the to-read pile ASAP. I would say that I wouldn’t normally identify as a fan of pop-culture type fiction, especially involving computer/video games (since my skill level hovers somewhere around Super Mario Brothers/Tetris), but I really enjoyed Ernest Cline’s previous book (Ready Player One) that was based around the video game quest. His new book, Armada is being released next week (the 14th) and I already plan to get the audiobook as soon as its available on audible. If its anything like RPO, i’m going to need to make sure that I put aside the whole day for listening, because I will just be sucked in (fingers crossed!)

armada

Description:
Zack Lightman has spent his life dreaming. Dreaming that the real world could be a little more like the countless science-fiction books, movies, and videogames he’s spent his life consuming. Dreaming that one day, some fantastic, world-altering event will shatter the monotony of his humdrum existence and whisk him off on some grand space-faring adventure.

But hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little escapism, right? After all, Zack tells himself, he knows the difference between fantasy and reality. He knows that here in the real world, aimless teenage gamers with anger issues don’t get chosen to save the universe.

And then he sees the flying saucer.

Even stranger, the alien ship he’s staring at is straight out of the videogame he plays every night, a hugely popular online flight simulator called Armada—in which gamers just happen to be protecting the earth from alien invaders.

No, Zack hasn’t lost his mind. As impossible as it seems, what he’s seeing is all too real. And his skills—as well as those of millions of gamers across the world—are going to be needed to save the earth from what’s about to befall it.

It’s Zack’s chance, at last, to play the hero. But even through the terror and exhilaration, he can’t help thinking back to all those science-fiction stories he grew up with, and wondering: Doesn’t something about this scenario seem a little…familiar?

Wishlist Wednesday – 01 July 2015

Wishlist WednesdayWishlist Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Pen to Paper where we post about one book that has been hanging out on our wish list (either for a long time, or not so long)

Looking at potential picks for this week was hard, because right now I have a glaring hole in books that I am looking forward to in July. I know that for this meme it can be any book i’m excited about reading, but personally, I want to keep my picks to books that I am going to get my hot little mits on, sooner rather than later…

So my pick for this week’s Waiting on Wednesday is an anthology that is coming out in a couple of weeks. I am looking forward to this anthology, not only because its got one of my favorite authors contributing (yes, I’m looking at you Jamie Farrell), but also a bunch of new to me authors, which always excites me.

Small Town Summer is an anthology featuring stories from Terri Osburn, Heatherly Bell, Jamie Farrell, Liz Flaherty, Regina Kyle, Amy Lamont, Stefanie London, Megan Ryder, Rebecca Thomas. Of these authors, I’ve only read Jamie Farrell and heard of Terri Osburn (and she comes highly rated from many friends who read contemporary romance). Small Town Summer is going to be released on July 14th and I already have it pre-ordered.

25770211Description:
From warm sunny days to long sultry nights, spend your summer falling in love in a small town! These nine contemporary romances featuring sassy heroines, sexy heroes, and lots of heartwarming romance make the perfect beach read. Whether your pleasure is sweet small town romance or smolderingly sexy love stories, there’s something in the Small Town Summer box set for everyone!

AWAKENING ANNA (Terri Osburn) – Librarian Anna Robinson is fascinated by Max Marshall, the hot young writer occupying the bestseller lists, and the apartment above hers. In one night, Max awakens Anna to true sexual pleasure, but the new lovers quickly learn that one night is never enough.

ANYWHERE WITH YOU (Heatherly Bell) – Welcome to Starlight Hill, California, where the wine flows freely and so does the gossip.
Celebrity stylist Kailey Robbins wants a second chance with ex-military pilot Joe Hannigan, but can she convince him that this time she’ll settle down into small town life?

MOONSHINE & MAGNOLIAS (Jamie Farrell) – Shelby’s a newly single mother learning how to be herself again. Zack’s the hot military man next door who loves a good adventure. And a chance encounter at a steamy summer softball game will challenge what they both thought they knew about their hearts, their lives, and their forevers.

SUMMER IN STRINGTOWN PROPER (Liz Flaherty) – Banker Molly Linden never expected to be alone and unemployed at fifty. Buying hunky carpenter Joe Rahilly’s saloon takes care of the employment situation, but she’s still alone. Or is she?

SUMMMER STOCK (Regina Kyle) – Jax Donovan left his hometown—and high school sweetheart Georgi Petersen—for the bright lights of Broadway. Now he’s back, but can he convince the lovely librarian that their romance is worth rekindling, on stage and off?

SERENA’S SOLDIER (Amy Lamont) – Young nurse Serena Adessi can’t wait to be reunited with the soldier she’s loved for as long as she can remember. But when Mace Palmer sustains a career-ending injury while deployed, can she convince him he still has a future worth fighting for?

A KISS IN KITE HARBOR (Stefanie London) – When plus size model, Shelby Jenkins, returns to her hometown she must face up to the bullies from her past, but the only person who can help her is the one who broke her heart. Small town advocate Nate Ritter is ready for redemption, but will he lose the woman of his dreams to the big city again?

HER LAST SHOT (Megan Ryder) – Girl next door Rachel Darling has been in love with local baseball hero, Bastien LeBeau, for her whole life. Now that he’s back in town, can she convince him that she’s the right woman for him or will he lose the best thing that might ever happen to him?

SWEET HOME ALASKA (Rebecca Thomas) – When Lauren Kinkade abandons her Hollywood dreams to run the family business back in Alaska, she reaches out to a former schoolmate to help get things off the ground. Trey Briggs has his reasons for turning her down, but can he really resist the girl he’s always wanted?

Waiting on Wednesday – 24 June

Wishlist WednesdayWaiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Pen to Paper where we post about one book that has been hanging out on our wish list (either for a long time, or not so long)

This is the first time that I have participated in Waiting for Wednesday, but I have a huge can’t wait for this book to be released list. In fact, I have an exclusive shelf on Goodreads dedicated solely to books that I need to stalk for release dates 😉 This week, the book I can’t wait to be released is actually a fairly new addition to my shelf, but I never imaged that the author would write another book about the main character, following the first one. So when I stumbled across it, I was like dancing with joy. The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate takes the reader back to the word of Calpurnia (Callie Vee) Tate, a young girl at the turn of the 20th century. The first book (The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate) was a breath of fresh air when I listened to it a few years ago and I can’t wait to see what she gets up to in this new adventure. As a bonus, the author did a great job of discussing evolution in the previous book (through the use of discovery of new plants) and I’m intrigued to see what she brings into this one.

You can read my review of the first book HERE

The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate is going to be released on July 7th and I know, already that I need to check and see if my library has it on pre-order (or if not, see if I can sweet talk the librarian into getting a copy).

calpurnia tate

Goodreads Description:
Callie Vee, Travis, Granddaddy, and the whole Tate clan are back in this charming follow-up to Newbery Honor–winner The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate.

Callie’s younger brother Travis keeps bringing home strays. And Callie has her hands full keeping the animals—Travis included—away from her mother’s critical eye.

When a storm blows change into town in the form of a visiting veterinarian, Callie discovers a life and a vocation she desperately wants. But with societal expectations as they are, she will need all her wits and courage to realize her dreams.

Whether it’s wrangling a rogue armadillo or stray dog, a guileless younger brother or standoffish cousin, the trials and tribulations of Callie Vee will have readers cheering for this most endearing heroine.

It’s Monday! What are you Reading?

it's monday what are you reading

One of my reading goals for 2015 was to be more active in posting current reading etc on my blog. Of course, its now the end of March and I think I’ve done that like once so far…so my goal for the second quarter of the year (Apr-Jun) is to participate in this meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey

I hope you guys will join in with me and participate 😉

Last week wasn’t a good reading week for me – I was busy trying to make up a bunch of hours at work, after being out with Bronchitis (which sucks BTW) as well as working my monthly 12 day work week (once a month because of military drill on the weekend), so by the time I got home each now and etched out time to get my workout in, I fell in to bed and passed out. That being said, I managed to finish reading 3 books and listened to 1.

week reading

My reading this week is still a bit up in the air, but since its the 1st of April, I get to dig into books that I’ve had sitting waiting for my new month of reading challenges to start. I have 2 audiobooks I have listening to right now – alternating between car and work:

current listening Both of these books are nominees in the Paranormal category for the Audies (Audiobook Awards) and I have been listening to all of them. One in the 9th book in a series that I have been working on for the last year (Pleasure of a Dark Prince – Immortals After Dark) and the other is a new to me author that falls more into the horror category (at least right now) than Paranormal – I was tweeting with the author the other day and made the comment about having nightmares because of his writing – he just laughed and thanked me for the compliment.

currentl readingOn the reading front, I have multiple books in progress (like normal) including 2 non-fiction (Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking and The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America), which is rarely for me – normally I’ll have one that I’m reading at a snail’s pace, but I managed to pick up 2 currently and they are intriguing me enough that I want to keep reading both. I am also continuing my tackling the TBR with Fever by Mary Beth Keane that I got back in 2013 when it was released and the never read. I’m going old school with a current romance read with Cry No More, written by the fabulous Linda Howard, written back in 2003 and finally, rounding out the current reading with Angel with a Bullet by M.C. Grant. I have read book 3 in this series a couple of months ago, so decided to go back and read from the beginning (good thing is that each of the books can basically stand on their own).

What about you – what are you reading this last Monday of March?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

monday reading
I can’t believe that it is officially the last Monday of the year. I don’t know about you guys, but it seems like 2014 just flew by – I had a little great reading, lots of good reading and some disappointing reading. I discovered many new authors that I look forward to reading again and moved prior favorites from the auto-buy pile to the get from the library pile because they just don’t live up my expectations any more. As we enter the last 3 days of 2014, I have my normal multiple books in progress:

Listening:
light between oceansThe Light Between the Ocean – M.L. Stedman
After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

I picked this audiobook up after seeing it mentioned in a GR group and because it showed up on the popular book club books list and since I’m not in any real life groups, I was curious to see what groups (be they face to face or virtual) find interesting/choose often. I’m about halfway through right now and enjoying the story. The narrator is new to me, but I’m enjoying him so far – having grown up in Australia, typical “Australia” accents in audiobooks but me, but his works. I’m interested to see how the book finishes up.

Reading:
waistcoats weaponryWaistcoats & Weaponry – Gail Carriger
Sophronia continues second year finishing school in style — with a steel-bladed fan secreted in the folds of her ball gown. She, best friend Dimity, sweet sootie Soap, and charming Lord Felix Mersey stow away on train to return classmate Sidheag to her werewolf pack in Scotland. No one suspects what or who would be aboard the suspiciously empty train.

I loved all of the books that I’ve read and listened to by this author – she is, IMHO, a good introduction to Steampunk (especially if you like a bit of a paranormal twist with Vampires/Werewolves). I listened to her Parasol Protectorate series and have been reading this series as its been released and can’t wait to see what Sophronia get’s up to in this newest book.

death cacheDeath Cache – Tiffinie Helmer
Loving her is murder…

She shouldn’t have played…

Gallery owner Tern Maiski has always had a way with men, but the one she gave her heart to disappeared without a word. Now he’s competing alongside her and four others in a high-tech treasure hunt, and her pride isn’t the only thing on the line. So is her life.

He doesn’t play by the rules…

Geophysicist Gage Fallon’s relationship with Tern has been cataclysmic from the beginning. He cared too much, too fast and their passion threatened to consume him. Now he’s back on firmer ground and competing in a game that will risk more than his heart.

Once their group is dropped off in a remote area near the Arctic Circle, it quickly becomes clear that instead of hunting for treasure, they’re the ones being hunted. And the killer is dead serious about caching them in.

Ms Helmer is an author that I see recommended quite often on Amazon for someone with a unique voice in contemporary romance today and based on the one book I’ve read by her, I have to agree. I love the Alaska setting and you can tell that the author does significant research into the topic she is writing about. I’m only a couple of chapters into this book right now, but already intrigued with the whole adventure Caching thing (I have some friends who are super into it and i’m intrigued to maybe try it in the New Year).

LTSSLiar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War – Karen Abbott
Karen Abbott illuminates one of the most fascinating yet little known aspects of the Civil War: the stories of four courageous women—a socialite, a farmgirl, an abolitionist, and a widow—who were spies.

After shooting a Union soldier in her front hall with a pocket pistol, Belle Boyd became a courier and spy for the Confederate army, using her charms to seduce men on both sides. Emma Edmonds cut off her hair and assumed the identity of a man to enlist as a Union private, witnessing the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. The beautiful widow, Rose O’Neale Greenhow, engaged in affairs with powerful Northern politicians to gather intelligence for the Confederacy, and used her young daughter to send information to Southern generals. Elizabeth Van Lew, a wealthy Richmond abolitionist, hid behind her proper Southern manners as she orchestrated a far-reaching espionage ring, right under the noses of suspicious rebel detectives.

I probably never would have picked this book up if I hadn’t seen the negative review for it in the Washington Post and subsequent discussions on the authors portrayal of events that occurred during the Civil War. So when I saw it on the new release shelf at the library I had to grab it. I’m about half-way through right now, but like the authors writing style and while there is a lot of detail, it is also a quick read (likely due to the typeset used). I’m trying to take my time reading it to absorb all the details.

stftStrength Training for Triathletes: The Complete Program to Build Triathlon Power, Speed, and Muscular Endurance – Patrick S. Hagerman
“Strength Training for Triathletes” offers a comprehensive strength training program for triathlon that will help triathletes build power, speed, and muscular endurance for faster racing over any race distance.

Certified USA Triathlon coach and NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year Patrick Hagerman, EdD, reveals a focused, triathlon-specific strength training program that will enable triathletes to push harder during training and on the race course when the effort is hardest. Triathletes who master this progressive strength training program will also become more resistant to injury, meaning fewer missed workouts.

“Strength Training for Triathletes” features 75 of the most effective strength training exercises for triathlon swimming, cycling, and running plus core strength and general conditioning. Full-color photographs illustrate each simple exercise, which are grouped so athletes can focus on their own individual performance limiters. Hagerman simplifies the science underlying strength training, offering easy-to-follow guidelines on resistance and reps that will make triathletes stronger through every phase of the season.

This is a review book from the publisher that I am currently reading. In 2014, I completed my first Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 run) and looking forward to doing another one in 2015. But I know that I need to factor in some strength training into my training program. So far, this book has done a good job in breaking down how to develop a training plan based on goals and I am about to get to the actual information about various exercises. While I have the kindle version to read, my one complaint is that tables haven’t come across well (formatting has been removed), so I see myself buying the print version in the future.

YfRYoga for Runners – Christine Felstead
As a runner, you strike the ground 1,000 times per mile, with a force of two to three times your body weight. You can feel that impact in the muscles, ligaments, and bone structures throughout your body. Thankfully, “Yoga for Runners” addresses both the physical and mental demands of the sport. Whether you are new to yoga or have practiced for years, “Yoga for Runners” provides you with the most effective poses–88 poses in all. Each pose is described in detail to ensure correct execution, maximizing the physical benefit and decreasing the risk of injury.

You’ll learn how simple yoga techniques can be incorporated into your existing running workouts and routines to eliminate chronic aches and pains. Discover how each pose can be sequenced to address a specific need, such as strengthen and lengthen the hamstrings, strengthen and increase mobility of the hip joint, eliminate lower-back and upper-body discomfort, speed the recovery process after a practice run or a race, maintain a strong core, or just restore and rejuvenate to prepare for an upcoming event. These sequences target all troublesome muscle regions. Anatomical illustrations and descriptions explain why these poses and sequences decrease your risk of acute or chronic injury as well as why they are beneficial to your training regimen.

After just a few weeks of following “Yoga for Runners,” you will feel stronger, more balanced, more in tune with your breathing, and more aware of your posture and technique. Your entire running experience–endurance, strength, breathing, and mental sharpness–will be more productive, positive, and enjoyable.

As with strength training, I know that I also need to building some Yoga/flexibility training into my workout plan – while this book is focused specifically on how Yoga can help runner’s, a lot of the issues also apply to cycling and I can see how I would be able to adjust recommendations to encompass cycling issues/imbalances. I borrowed this book from the library, but I can see myself buying it for reference in the future.

How about you – what are you reading on this last Monday of 2014?

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 series I want to start

top ten tuesday

Where to begin…I thought when I took a look at this Top 10, that coming up with 10 series that I REALLY wanted to start would be easy – I could just look through my Goodreads shelves and be done…but of course that wasn’t the case. I had a lot of books that were first in series on them, but when I sat down at thought about it, I wasn’t jumping up and down to read them – which is kind of how I interpreted the “want to start” portion of the question. My other issue is that books that were first in the series that I wanted to start reading, I had either already read a later book (for whatever reason)…so those were also knocked off my list.

Either way, here we go (these are in no particular order for excitment/intention):

a trace of smokeHannah Vogel – Rebecca Cantrell
Book #1 – A Trace of Smoke
A mystery series, featuring crime reporter, Hannah Vogel, set in 1930’s Germany. This series intrigues me because of the time period – I’ve always been interested in the 1930’s and 1940’s, particularly in Europe. I’ve never read any of the authors stand-alone books, but did enjoy the book that she co-wrote with James Rollins.

the coronerJenny Cooper – M.R. Hall
Book #1 – The Coroner
I’m a huge fan of mysteries with a medical basis, so with the main character in the Jenny Cooper series being a coroner, it seems to be right up my alley. Plus, I’m on a bit of a kick of books set in the UK right now.

dragon actuallyDragon Kin – G.A. Aiken
Book #1 – Dragon Actually
Lots of my friends swear by this author (who also writes under the name Shelley Laurenston) and this book has been loitering on the virtual TBR pile for a while – supposedly if you like humorous paranormal romances, she is a go-to author. I’ve found her books under her other name to be a bit hit/miss – sometimes the humor is pitch perfect, other times it feels really forced. But I’m interested in checking this one out.

night falls darklyShadow Guard – Kim Lenox
Book #1 – Night Falls Darkly
I’m always on the lookout for unique paranormal romances – and while I don’t remember when I added this one to my shelf, I occasionally come across it and think that I need to try the series, but then I get distracted. I love the idea of paranormal romance that is set in a historical time period, rather than contemporary.

mind gamesThe Disillusionists – Carolyn Crane
Book #1 – Mind Games
This might be a little bit cheating because its only a trilogy and I technically read the prequel to it in an anthology a couple of years ago, but I recently found my copy of the book when I was tidying up my bookshelves which reminded me that I still needed to read it. Looking forward to digging in soon.

teh restorerGraveyard Queen – Amanda Stevens
#1 – The Restorer
I’ve been told that I HAVE to read this book and its on the TBR pile – I really like the idea of a Graveyard Restorer – it is something that I have never come across in a book series before. I’m looking forward to reading it sometime in the near future.

still lifeChief Inspector Armand Gamache – Louise Penny
Book #1 – Still Life
This is another series where reading friends swear up and down that I need to read – in fact, I’ve had book 1 in audiobook format sitting on the virtual to-listen pile for a while. Although reviews of the most recent book were a bit iffy, so I’m undecided if I want to risk diving into another series that I may end up disliking

return of captain john emmettLaurence Bartram – Elizabeth Speller
#1 – The Return of Captain John Emmett
I’d actually never heard of this series until I randomly came across book 1 while I was browsing the audio books at my local library – but after reading the description – a mystery set in post-WW1 England, I’m intrigued and looking forward to reading it. Plus a friend of mine who is a notoriously hard reviewer gave it 4 stars, which means it must be good

lickStage Dive – Kylie Scott
Book #1 – Lick
This is a series that many of my friends, both on Goodreads and blogs are raving about right now. I will admit that i have a fondness for rock star romances – I love the bad boy trope. But I will admit upfront that I am probably going to read this series out of order, because my library have #3 available to borrow the other day and I grabbed it.

prudenceThe Custard Protocal – Gail Carriger
Book #1 – Prudence
So this series isn’t being released until March next year, but I can’t wait to read it. I loved all the books in the Parasol Protectorate series (even the one that others seemed to hate), as well as the pseudo-prequel books in the Finishing School series.

The only question remaining is: What do I start?

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading?

monday reading
Have you every had one of those weekends where you know the rest of your work week is going to be long and painful. That was me this weekend – being a Navy reservist, I do one weekend a month of duty – which normally means long hours – case in point, last night (Sunday), I didn’t walk i the door until 7:30pm after leaving at 5:30am. Yes, I know it probably seems a bit whiney and I shouldn’t but some days I get grumpy. I think I may put a grumpy bear warning on my desk at work. Hopefully, reading this week, will put me in a better place.

murder on murray hillMurder in Murray Hill – Victoria Thompson
Frank Malloy has never known any life other than that of a cop, but his newfound inheritance threatens his position within his department. While trying to keep both his relationship with Sarah and his fortune under wraps, he’s assigned to a new case—finding a missing young woman for her worried father, Henry Livingston.

It seems the girl had been responding to “lonely hearts” ads in the paper for months before she disappeared. Her father thinks that she’s eloped with a deceptive stranger, but Malloy fears the worst, knowing that the grifters who place such ads often do much more than simply abscond with their victims. But as Sarah and Malloy delve deeper into a twisted plot targeting the city’s single women, it’s their partnership—both professional and private—that winds up in the greatest peril

I’ve been reading this series in bits and pieces over the last few months. I like the fact that I can easily jump around between books in the series without being too lost – while there is some story arc, it isn’t so detailed that you get lost. I’m only about an hour into this audiobook but I am enjoying it so far and looking forward to listening to it during my commute to work this week.

i shall be near youI Shall Be Near You – Erin Lindsey McCabe
Rosetta doesn’t want her new husband Jeremiah to enlist, but he joins up, hoping to make enough money that they’ll be able to afford their own farm someday. Though she’s always worked by her father’s side as the son he never had, now that Rosetta is a wife she’s told her place is inside with the other women. But Rosetta decides her true place is with Jeremiah, no matter what that means, and to be with him she cuts off her hair, hems an old pair of his pants, and signs up as a Union soldier.
Rosetta drills with the men, prepares herself for battle, and faces the tension as her husband comes to grips with having a fighting wife. Fearing discovery of her secret, Rosetta’s strong will clashes with Jeremiah’s as their marriage is tested by war. Inspired by over two hundred and fifty documented accounts of the women who fought in the Civil War while disguised as men, I Shall Be Near To You is the intimate story, in Rosetta’s powerful and gorgeous voice, of the drama of marriage, one woman’s amazing exploits, and the tender love story that can unfold when two partners face life’s challenges side by side.

I won this book during the Penguin First Reads giveaway about 6 months ago, but like normal, it got added to the mountain range that is my to-be-read pile – but for some reason, it right it looks intriguing, so I’m digging on in. I’ve heard good things about it from people on Twitter, so fingers crossed.

designed by loveDesigned By Love – Kelsey Browning
Ashton Davenport: Hot blonde. Old Money. Off-limits.
That’s how Mac McLaughlin sees her, anyway. And now that he’s enduring a temporary self-imposed exile in tiny Shelbyville, Texas, he’s seeing her way too often. Mac only wants to succeed as the contractor for the Lily Lake development in order to rebuild his reputation and return to Dallas, pronto. A sexy distraction like Ashton was not in the plans.

Mac McLaughlin: Hot builder. Cash poor. Hands-on.
Ashton kissed her trust fund goodbye and left her life as a society princess to prove she could make it on her own. Developing Lily Lake is her big chance, but it’s hard to stay focused working side-by-side with bossy, rough-around-the-edges Mac. Especially when he pulls off his shirt.

When the discovery of an endangered species derails the project, Mac can’t afford to stick around for a stalled job. His and Ashton’s explosive chemistry aside, he’s outta there…unless she can convince him that they just might be able to build something together

I always love getting ARC’s from authors I love – and Kelsey Browning is no different. This is the 4th book in her Texas Nights series and the second one i’ve gotten the opportunity to read/review early. Its actually been burning a hole in my TBR pile for close to a month, but since it isn’t released until November, I wanted to hold off reading it for a little bit while – so my mind was fresh-ish when it came time to post my review

judgmentJudgment – Carey Baldwin
hen a coed falls prey to a sadistic murderer, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Caitlin “Caity” Cassidy and Special Agent Atticus Spenser are called in to testify–one for the defense, one for the prosecution. With warring approaches to justice, these two rivals have been butting heads for years–both inside the courtroom and out. And at first, this case appears to be no different.

But when a brutal attack leaves the accused man dead and Caity in critical condition, petty differences take a backseat to saving lives. As the lone survivor, Caity knows too much, and the killer–a madman calling himself the Man in the Maze–is coming back for round two. Now Caity and Spense must join forces to uncover the killer’s identity before Caity’s time–and luck–runs out.

This is another new to me author – I happened to come across her in a facebook group (I think it was for Avon romance…) and she was looking for reviewers for her new book – I was intrigued enough by the description that I asked her for a review copy and looking forward to reading it.

Wish me luck on my reading week 😉

Random Reads – October

random reads

So I’m coming a little bit late to this for October, since I just found the meme, but I love the idea. I’m always really bad about adding books to my TBR list on Goodreads and then they just sit there, until I clean off the list and move them to some other virtual list. Since I use multiple TBR lists on Goodreads, I’m going to stick with my To-Read-2014 List for this challenge. These are books that I have found randomly intriguing throughout the year – I try to keep it relatively up to date (as compared to my general to-read that has 1200+ books on it).

As of October 16, 2014, this list has 405 books on it – by using random.org and the random number generator set between 1 and 405 – I got 345 which corresponds to Bully – Penelope Douglas. I added this to my to-read shelf in July of this year, so its a relatively new one on the shelf, but I’m hearing lots of people talk about it on Goodreads and Amazon – it seems to be a fairly polarizing book – either you love it or you hate it.

My name is Tate. He doesn’t call me that, though. He would never refer to me so informally, if he referred to me at all. No, he’ll barely even speak to me.

But he still won’t leave me alone.

We were best friends once. Then he turned on me and made it his mission to ruin my life. I’ve been humiliated, shut out, and gossiped about all through high school. His pranks and rumors got more sadistic as time wore on, and I made myself sick trying to stay out of his way. I even went to France for a year, just to avoid him.

But I’m done hiding from him now, and there’s no way in hell I’ll allow him to ruin my senior year. He might not have changed, but I have. It’s time to fight back.

I’m not going to let him bully me anymore.

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading?

monday readingI’ve been following Sheila (Book Journey)’s blog for over a year now and have often added many books to Mt TBR when I read her “It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?” thread, so I figured I would finally jump into the fun and post my updates.

I had a great long weekend at a reader’s luncheon in Washington DC on Saturday where I scored like 20 new books to read (although, I have no idea where I am going to start). I also have (like always) about 4 different books in progress. So here is a bit of a glimpse into the current state of my currently-reading pile.

dying to pleaseDying to Please – Linda Howard
Loyal. Beautiful. Professional. Impeccably organized. Potentially lethal. Sarah Stevens is a woman with many distinct qualities. First and foremost a butler par excellence, skilled at running large households smoothly and efficiently, she is also a trained bodyguard and expert marksman–indispensable to her elderly employer, a courtly gentleman whom Sarah has come to respect and love as a father.

Then one night she thwarts a burglary in progress, a courageous act that rewards Sarah her requisite “fifteen minutes of fame” with the local press. But the exposure is enough to catch the attention of a tortured soul who, unbeknownst to Sarah, will stop at nothing to have her for himself.

I picked up this book because of a reading challenge, specifically, I needed a book with one of the following words in the title: please, “thank you”, thanks, “may I”, pardon, welcome, sorry. I found Dying to Please, in stock at the library in the audiobooks and its by a narrator I liked (Susan Erickson who also does the In Death books). I’m about 2/3 of the way through right now and I can see why many of my reading friends who have read it have issues with the hero in the story and some of his actions – I don’t know if I have faith that Ms Howard will pull off a believable ending, but we shall see.

anything but sweetAnything But Sweet – Candis Terry
HE’S STUBBORN AND THOROUGHLY MALE . . .
If Charlotte Brooks thinks she and her TV makeover show can turn Reno Wilder’s hometown upside down, he’ll be happy to prove her wrong. The x-Marine has seen too much turmoil and he likes Sweet, Texas, just the way it is. Traditional. Familiar. A little dull. Everything Charli isn’t. But instead of backing off from his scowls like everyone else, Charli digs in her skyscraper heels.

SHE’S TENACIOUS AND WICKEDLY TEMPTING . . .
Reno Wilder is a one-man unwelcoming committee, but Charli isn’t budging. It’s clear the gorgeous cowboy needs an overhaul just as much as Sweet. Someone needs to break him out of that gruff shell and show him how fun and rewarding a little change can be.
THEY’RE ABOUT TO FIND THAT LOVE IS ANYTHING BUT PREDICTABLE.

Anything But Sweet is another book that I picked up for a reading challenge (this time, I needed a book set in Texas). Can you tell that I like reading challenges? Candice Terry was recommended to me by T.J. Kline after I won a blogger prize from her at a launch party and was looking for a book set in Texas. I’m also a sucker for small-town romances, so I’m intrigued how this is going to turn out. I’m only about 10% of the way in on my kindle – so still very undecided.

podium finishPodium Finish – Beth Pond
With six months until the Olympic Games, seventeen-year-old Harper’s life is pretty much perfect. She’s fighting for the starting spot on Team USA Women’s Hockey, and for the first time ever, she has a crush on a guy who likes her back. She feels like the luckiest girl in the world, until she runs a risky play at practice and breaks her knee, thereby sentencing herself to six weeks in a cast and possibly ending her Olympic dream before it even starts.

For seventeen-year-old Alex, being anything less than the best is unacceptable. That’s why, after a miserable debut season at the senior level, the former junior national singles champion switches to ice dance. Her skating partner, Ace, is an “all skating all the time” type of guy, which would be fine, if he’d stop keeping secrets about the real reason he and his former partner broke up. Now is not the time for second thoughts, but how can Alex skate her best if she can’t trust her partner…or herself?

As the pressure to make the Olympic team builds, the girls must rely on each other, because if there’s one thing they both know, it’s that the only thing harder than skating to the top is staying there.

Podium Finish was a random pick-up when I was browsing the new release ebooks on the library website. I don’t exactly know what intrigued me about it, but I’m really hoping for a fairly angst free YA book, but I have a worry based on what I’ve read so far, that I’m not going to get that. Its told it an alternating POV, Harper, the Ice hockey player and Alex, the Ice Dancer. I guess time will tell how this will turn out.

rock addictionRock Addiction – Nalini Singh
A bad boy wrapped in a sexy, muscled, grown-up package might be worth a little risk…
Molly Webster has always followed the rules. After an ugly scandal tore apart her childhood and made her the focus of the media’s harsh spotlight, she vowed to live an ordinary life. No fame. No impropriety. No pain. Then she meets Zachary Fox, a tattooed bad boy rocker with a voice like whiskey and sin, and a touch that could become an addiction.

A one-night stand with the hottest rock star on the planet, that’s all it was meant to be…
Fox promises scorching heat and dangerous pleasure, coaxing Molly to extend their one-night stand into a one-month fling. After that, he’ll be gone forever, his life never again intersecting with her own. Sex and sin and sensual indulgence, all with an expiration date. No ties, no regrets. Too late, Molly realizes it isn’t only her body that’s become addicted to Fox, but her heart…

I should love this book, Nalini Singh is probably one of my current favorite authors, I devour her Psy-Changling books when they are released, but for some reason, this one just isn’t working for me. I’ve had it in progress for close to a month and I just have no desire to pick it up. I know when I do, I’ll probably get sucked in and finish it up, but reading it now, is just ehh…I guess I’ll try to finish it up this week, since I have Friday off and we’ll go from there.

I guess that’s about it – What books are your currently reading? Anything that makes you scream, must read?

Deja Vu Review (8) – A Classic

The Deja Vu Review is a weekly meme hosted by Brittany at The Book Addicts Guide. Its an opportunity to revisit old books you might have read before you launched your blog, but that you think should maybe still be highlighted.

A Classic

For as big of a reader that I have been for many years, my knowledge of the classics is sorely lacking. In part because growing up in Australia, lots of the classics that kids read in the US aren’t read – I also didn’t take the English class where they did read some of those classics. So it wasn’t until college when I optionally took a Shakespeare course for English (yes, i was that person) and moving into my 20’s and now 30’s, that I have started reading more classics. In fact, just recently, I decided to participate in the The Classics Club 5 year challenge – where the goal is to read 50 classics (you determine what makes a book a classic) in the next 5 years. I had a great time picking my books, now to actually read them 😉

jane eyreBut onto the Deja Vu Review question – this was actully a relatively easy pick for me. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. This was one of the first classics I read after I graduated from college and started listening to audiobooks on a regular basis and I was blown away. I loved reading/listening about Jane’s trials and tribulations and came to love her as a character. While I haven’t yet, I easily forsee myself re-reading JE in the future. As well as watching several (if not all) of the various movie adaptions that have come out over the years.

I am also excited to see what lays in the future for me with the other classics that I have chosen to read.
