It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (24 October)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

I feel like I just spent a good portion of the weekend blogging because I participated in the semi-annual Dewey’s 24 hour Read-A-Thon on Saturday (we started at 8am and it finished 8am on Sunday). While I’ve pseudo participated in the past, this was the first RAT that I was actively trying to read as much as possible and as long as possible. Aside from a 2hr nap in the afternoon and then a short doze around 6:45 (for 20ish minutes), I read (or listened to audio) pretty much the rest of the time. Ultimately, I finished 9 books (3 of which were significantly in progress; 1 which I had read a chapter of and the other 5 were complete reads) – these 9 books resulted in 2583pgs being read (to include the 3 books that I still have in progress). I also listened to 239 minutes (so nearly 4 hours) of my current audiobook (this worked great while I was out running errands, or when I was updating my blog every couple of hours). So I was uber-proud of my participation and hope to beat it in April when the next read-a-thon rolls around.

I’m honestly not sure how much reading i’ll get done this weekend as I prep for my last race of the season (or at least that’s what I’m telling myself)…for some reason, I thought it would be a great idea to run the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday, only 3 weeks after doing my Ironman…all I can say is, in the singing of Dirks Bentley…”what was I thinking?

Currently/Planned Reading:
I finished up Dewey’s Read-A-Thon with 3 books in progress – so my goal this week is to finish them up. I also have an ARC of a new contemporary romance that is due the first week of November, so i’m hoping to get that read this week. I do have my normal variety of genres that are in progress (I mean, I have to keep things interesting right?). The list as it currently stands (subject to any random whims of reading) is: Malicious Intent – I’m about 35% of the way through this right now – i was hoping to get it read during the Read-a-thon but it wasn’t completely keeping my interest (aka, I needed something lighter to read at 4am this morning). I also have Surfacing (Siri Lindley) – an autobiography (I had hoped to get this read last week, but real life got in the way) and The Curse of Tenth Grave (the newest book in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones – this came in for me at the library and I need to get it read and returned).

24oct-books

Currently/Planned Listening:
I have a shade over 3hrs left in Lothaire currently (thank to the nearly 4 hours I listened to during the read-a-thon, as well as going to dinner with friends and having a bit of a drive to get there. So I should finish it up either today or tomorrow (figuring a 2-3 hour commute which is the norm for a Monday). Once I finish with it, then i’m going to tackle 2 audiobooks at once – one a mystery/thriller (The Grave Tattoo, by Val McDermid) and the other, the final in the MaddAddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood (science fiction/dystopia).

What about you- how does your last (full) week in October look for reading and listening?

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (17 Oct)

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

Blink and you miss it, because in case you didn’t know, we’re now half-way through October…and as someone posted recently on facebook (in true Will Ferrell in Elf style), it’ll be Christmas in 10 weeks…yikes! This week marks a new milestone for me – I’m starting a new job after being on military orders for the last year (as a weekend warrior, I had the option of taking various forms of military orders and had a great year doing that) but its time to go back to the real world (oh and I forgot the joy of having to figure out what I’m going to wear and now having a uniform to default too…

I’m slowly but surely plugging away on my yearly reading challenge (hosted by Goodreads) – I got a bit behind when I had a reading slump a few months ago, but i’m chipping away a book at time (and trying to not fall into the tendency to read a bunch of shorties to make up the difference). My reading goals right now are simple – try to knock down the amount of books on my currently reading list (I think at one stage it was at 20+…books that I had started and gotten distracted reading and just never removed); and try to read the various books that i’ve borrowed via Kindle Unlimited that have been sitting for a while unread.

Currently Reading:
17oct

I have my typical multiple books going at once – what can I say? I’m looking forward to starting Surfacing, which is a memoir by Siri Lindley – who the triathlon for many of world’s top athletes including Mirinda Carfare (i totally have a girl crush on Rinny). I dug into my Kindle archives with Texas Hold Him (Lisa Cooke) which I bought back in 2009. The other 4 books are from my Kindle Unlimited subscription – 2 are series that I found and continuing (the Trudi Jay Magic Carnival series and Alison Kent’s Hope Springs series) and then 2 first in series (although I’m kind of cheating because I read book 2 by Crystal Bowling already).

Currently Listening:
oct-17-audiobooks

On the currently listening pile, I am almost done with the first book in the Department Q series (The Keeper of Lost Causes) – the reveal of who the key suspect is has just occurred and I have about 3 hours left. I’m alternating The Keeper of Lost Causes with Lothaire (Kresley Cole) – although my ipod touch decided to hate me and I lost where I was in the book when I had to reset the app…but it should be fairly easy to figure out again. I’m also listening to The September Society by Charles Finch (which is kind of confusing because the main character is Charles Lenox…)

Anyways that is my meandering What Am I reading this middle week of October…

What about you – what are you reading?

Waiting on Wednesday – 21 September

New WoW

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Breaking the Spine where bloggers spotlight eagerly anticipated upcoming releases.

the-german-girl This week’s Waiting on Wednesday pick is an upcoming historical fiction set in the lead-up to World War 2. Its kind of weird how sometimes it seems like authors are in my brain examining ideas for what I would love to see featured in a book – and this book is no different.

A few months ago I was at the Holocaust Museum in DC (which if you have never been there, find a way to visit). Anyways, on the first floor you enter (which is actually the 5th floor) there are lots of displays about the lead-up to WW2 and one of the featured events was the sailing of the Saint Louis to Cuba from Europe – which many Jewish families were hoping to use as a way to escape Hitler’s persecution.

Added to being intrigued by what could potentially have happened on that ship and not knowing if anyone had even written anything about this period in history – I was immediately intrigued when I saw an advertisement for The German Girl by Armanda Luca Correa.

the German Girl has a release date of October 18, 2016 and while I don’t often pre-order books, I broke my rule for this one and can’t wait to read it.

Description:
In 1939 before everything changed, Hannah Rosenthal lived a charmed life. Her family moved in Berlin’s highest social circles, admired by friends and neighbors. Eleven-year-old Hannah was often taken by her mother for an afternoon treat at the tea room of the beautiful Adlon Hotel, both dressed in their finest clothes. She spent her afternoons at the park with her best friend Leo Martin. But, in an instant, that sunlit world vanished. Now the streets of Berlin are draped with red, white, and black flags; their fine possessions are hauled away, and they are no longer welcome in the places that once felt like home. The two friends make a pact: come what may, they promise to have a future together.

As Hannah and Leo’s families desperately begin to search for a means of escape, a glimmer of hope appears when they discover the Saint Louis, a transatlantic liner that can give Jews safe passage to Cuba. After a frantic search to obtain visas, the Rosenthals and the Martins depart from Hamburg on the luxurious passenger liner bound for Havana. Life aboard the ship is a welcome respite from the gloom of Berlin—filled with masquerade balls, dancing, and exquisite meals every night.

As the passengers gain renewed hope for a bright future ahead, love between Hannah and Leo blossoms. But soon reports from the outside world began to filter in, and dark news overshadows the celebratory atmosphere on the ship; the governments of Cuba, the United States, and Canada are denying the passengers of the St. Louis admittance to their countries, forcing them to return to Europe as it descends into the Second World War. The ship that had seemed their salvation seems likely to become their death sentence.

After four days anchored at bay, only a handful of passengers are allowed to disembark onto Cuban soil, and Hannah and Leo must face the grim reality that they could be torn apart. Their future is unknown, and their only choice will have an impact in generations to come.

Decades later in New York City on her eleventh birthday, Anna Rosen receives a mysterious envelope from Hannah, a great-aunt she has never met but who raised her deceased father. In an attempt to piece together her father’s mysterious past, Anna and her mother travel to Havana to meet Hannah, who is turning eighty-seven years old. Hannah reveals old family ties, recounts her journey aboard the Saint Louis and, for the first time, reveals what happened to her father and Leo. Bringing together the pain of the past with the mysteries of the present, Hannah gives young Anna a sense of their shared histories, forever intertwining their lives, honoring those they loved and cruelly lost.

It’s Monday – What are you reading?

its-monday-what-are-you-reading

It’s Monday – What are you reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date.

so I promised at the end of August (jeez, has it been 2 weeks already) – that I was going to try and do better about being more consistent with blog posts – and what better way to do that, than the do a weekly meme about what are you reading? I’ve participated in It’s Monday, what are you reading? on and off through the years – and its always a good way to just capture my thoughts on different books that i have in progress…so without further ado…

Currently Reading:
Like always, I have a variety of books that are currently in progress – some are on my kindle, some are in print and others are in audiobook. I know of describe it as a reader’s version of ADD (also know as multiple book syndrome).

what-are-you-reading-19-sept

I have (at least) 6 books that are currently in reading progress – from a non-fiction about mental endurance when it comes to endurance thoughts – because seriously, my brain decided to screw with me every time I do a long distance race (and my review of the book when I post it will focus more on that); to a cult classic of Peyton Place (also known as the book that shocked the nation); to a new author I discovered via Kindle Unlimited (Alison Kent). Pretty much all of the books that I am currently reading are related to different reading challenges that I am currently participating in – which is probably what makes my reading choices seem so bi-polar at times.

My book ADD is continuing with my audiobook choices – normally, I only have 1 book going at once, but for some reason, while I’m enjoying the books i’m listening to, I have a short attention span right now.

audiobooks-sep-19

I think its safe to say, after listening to the first 2 CD’s (and a bit) of Grunt that I now know more about genital reconstruction than I ever wanted to know – but that honestly doesn’t surprise me because where her brain goes in these books honestly scares me at times. I’m also alternating between book 2 in Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy – about a world where corporations reign supreme and genetic engineering is taken for granted; and Dark Skye, book 15 in Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series. It’ll be interesting to see how I balance listening to the three of these over the next week – haha!

What about you – what is on the reading pile for this upcoming week?

Waiting on Wednesday – 13 July 2016

New WoW

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

I’ve been on a recent 20th century historical fiction kick (which seems kind of weird to say, considering that the 20th century ended only 16 years ago and I was alive during the end of it)…but specifically, books set from World War 1 (inclusive) through the end of world war 2, so i was excited to see the following book pop up in the Publisher’s Weekly upcoming releases list.

secrets of nanreath hallSecrets of Nanreath Hall: A Novel – Alix Rickloff
Release Date: August 2, 2016

Tagline: This incredible debut historical novel—in the tradition of Beatriz Williams and Jennifer Robson—tells the fascinating story of a young mother who flees her home on the rocky cliffs of Cornwall and the daughter who finds her way back, seeking answers.

Why Waiting on Wednesday?
Sometimes when taglines say for fans of certain authors, I’d immediately buy, or I’ll avoid…but in this instance, I’ve had very limited exposure of the 2 authors mentioned in the tagline (Beatriz Williams and Jennifer Robson), but I’ve (unintentionally) been making my way through the different decades of the 20th century (with a WW1 anthology, followed soon after by a book set in the 1920’s) – although, I’ll admit, I still need to find a book set in the 1930’s…but this will likely be my book for the 1940’s when I get there 🙂 (although, it seemed to be a book that tells the story in 2 time periods, which if done right, is a story format that I really enjoy). Plus, I’ll admit there was some total cover lust for this book – its a cover that is just simple and elegant and one that I would totally buy in a store if i was just browsing the shelves.

What about you – what is your “Waiting on Wednesday” book?

Waiting on Wednesday – 29 June 2016

New WoW

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Its been a while since i’ve participated in a Waiting on Wednesday – this year has been so busy that i’ve done a really bad job about tracking new releases…or I come across a book that sounds interesting and mean to do a post on it…before promptly forgetting…but since I had some downtime tonight, I figured I would take a quick look at a couple of the websites I use for tracking books to see if anything caught my eye.

don't tell me you're afraid
Don’t Tell Me You’re Afraid – Giuseppe Catozzella and Anne Milano Appel
Release Date: August 2, 2016

Tagline: Based on a remarkable true story, an unforgettable Somali girl risks her life on the migrant journey to Europe to run in the Olympic Games

Why Waiting on Wednesday?
It’s funny – normally, I’m a total cover reader (meaning the vast majority of the books that I pick, I pick because of the cover) and yet there is nothing really eye catching about the cover of Don’t Tell Me You’re Afraid, in fact, its a very tame cover. But as I reading through the August list for Bookreporter, it was the tag line that caught my eye. After reading When the Moon is Low (Nadia Hashimi) a few months ago, I became interested in more immigrant/immigration fiction, especially books that are based around people escaping their war-torn country (like Afghanistan in When the Moon is Low). I’ll be intrigued to see how the fictional version of the true story comes to be and know that I will be asking my library to get me a copy when its released.

Wishlist Wednesday – 03 February 2016

Wishlist WednesdayWishlist Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Pen to Paper where we post about one book that has been hanging out on our wish list (either for a long time, or not so long)

Sometimes I randomly come across books that look interesting but aren’t available yet and then promptly forget about what intrigued me about said book to begin with… This weeks Wishlist Wednesday book is no exception. According to GR, I added this book in early January, so its likely that I came across it mentioned in a thread reads to look forward to.

association of small bombsThe Association of Small Bombs
Author: Karan Mahajan
Release Date: March 22nd 2016
Genres: Contemporary Fiction, World Fiction (India), Diverse Reading

Description:
When brothers Tushar and Nakul Khurana, two Delhi schoolboys, pick up their family’s television set at a repair shop with their friend Mansoor Ahmed one day in 1996, disaster strikes without warning. A bomb—one of the many “small” bombs that go off seemingly unheralded across the world—detonates in the Delhi marketplace, instantly claiming the lives of the Khurana boys, to the devastation of their parents. Mansoor survives, bearing the physical and psychological effects of the bomb. After a brief stint at university in America, Mansoor returns to Delhi, where his life becomes entangled with the mysterious and charismatic Ayub, a fearless young activist whose own allegiances and beliefs are more malleable than Mansoor could imagine. Woven among the story of the Khuranas and the Ahmeds is the gripping tale of Shockie, a Kashmiri bomb maker who has forsaken his own life for the independence of his homeland.

Why am I excited to read it?
Talking about events such as terrorist events, especially in fiction, is a topic that IMHO takes a brave writer to tackle. Many of us remember where we were on 9/11, but there have been numerous other attacks around the world since then, many in countries that most of us possibly couldn’t locate on a map. This book intrigued me for that reason – an insight into the effects and after-effects of a series of small bombs (and while I haven’t read it, potential terrorist attacks). I’m intrigued to see how the author manages to weave the story of a bomb maker into that of his victims. An additional enticement to read The Association of Small Bombs is my desire to diversify my reading in 2016 by reading authors from different geographical regions of the world.

It’s Monday – What Are You Reading? (01 Feb 16)

book date its monday

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme has had various host over the years and I’ve loved checking in with their different blogs – the newest host is Kathryn and The Book Date. I’m looking forward to following her and participating in this meme again 😉

Just a couple of weeks ago, I mused in this post how we were already half-way through January, and now we are officially into February. So we are 1/12 of the year through the year…if you weren’t tracking the weather, then you might have missed that DC was hit with what I am terming Snowzilla 2016 last week, which while I gripe about having to shovel snow was good because it justified me being able to be a bum and just chill on the couch and read for a few days in an attempt to get caught up on my 2016 reading goal. Yeah, I know we are only one month in and i’m saying get caught up, but thanks to the handy dandy Goodreads challenge widget, I know that if I want to read my goal of 365 books in a year (which is my standard goal) that I am currently 6 books behind target). I know that isn’t too many, so here’s hoping i’ll be able to get caught up in February.

snowzilla comfort readsI’d probably term this last week, getting back to old favorites when it came to my reading (also known as comfort reads). I got caught up on Nalini Singh’s Rock Kiss series, reading books 1.5 and 3 in the series; I also returned to visit Mustang Ridge with Jesse Hayworth’s, Harvest at Mustang Ridge and finally, I went back to where it all began with the Quilter’s Apprentice in the Elm Creek series (it was one of those series where I didn’t start at the beginning…naughty reader than I am). For me, all of these were books were like visiting old friends and were perfect for curling up while the snow fell for over a day and a half. Unfortunately, then I had to dig myself out…

snowzilla new authorsI also tried a few new authors who were hiding out on my virtual Mt TBR, or in the new release section at the library (does that count as hiding?). In the new to me authors, it seemed to be the week of businessmen (or is it businesspeople) with 2 CEO’s (one a real estate mogul and one the owner of a jeans company); a bakery owner and the disparate character, a nun(or specifically Mother Superior) in 1920’s Ireland. After reading these four, I know i’ll be checking out more by these authors in the future. I love it when I can add new authors to my massive Mt TBR (being serious here).

This upcoming week, I am pushing ahead on the major reading challenge that I am doing – we are in the last month of the three month challenge (and then it starts all over again) and for the first time in the 4+ years that I’ve been doing this challenge, I don’t know if I’ll finish it (which stabs me in my competitive little heart). But with 47 books to go (including the several that I have in progress), I don’t think its doable in the next month…that being said, I’m currently revisiting Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series with Archangel’s Shadow (book 7 in the series, although I am bouncing around with this series as I have with other series recently); I am already getting ready to launch into both Kimberly Kincaid and Robin Covington’s new books (Reckless and Her Secret Lover respectively); finally, I’m revising Anitra Lynn McLeod’s Onic Empire with Wicked Empress. On the non-fiction side of the house (or my hoity-toity thinkin book), i’m working on The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence has Declined.

first week of feb reading

What about you guys – what are you reading this first week of February?

Wishlist Wednesday – 27 January 2016

Wishlist WednesdayWishlist Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Pen to Paper where we post about one book that has been hanging out on our wish list (either for a long time, or not so long)

My pick for this weeks Wishlist Wednesday is a book that is actually due out in less than a week and that I already have reserved at the library for when their copies come in (here’s hoping, I’ll be one of the first to get to read it).

salt to the sea
Salt to the Sea
Author: Ruta Sepetys
Release Date: Feb 2, 2016
Genres: Young Adult, Historical Fiction, World War 2 Fiction

Description:
In 1945, World War II is drawing to a close in East Prussia, and thousands of refugees are on a desperate trek toward freedom, almost all of them with something to hide. Among them are Joana, Emilia, and Florian, whose paths converge en route to the ship that promises salvation, the Wilhelm Gustloff. Forced by circumstance to unite, the three find their strength, courage, and trust in each other tested with each step closer toward safety.

Just when it seems freedom is within their grasp, tragedy strikes. Not country, nor culture, nor status matter as all ten thousand people aboard must fight for the same thing: survival.

Why am I excited to read it?
Ruta Sepetys’ debut book a few years back (2011), Between Shades of Grey, told the story of a teenager displaced and sent to Siberia when Russia annexed the Baltic states in 1941. It was a unique story to me as I read it, because not only did it touch on an era in history that isn’t routinely taught in high school (or college to my knowledge), but that it was also based in part on experiences by her family members. Ms Sepetys has the ability to write historical fiction in a way that just sucks you in and if her newest is like Between Shades of Grey, I might have to plan on a sleepless night, because I couldn’t put it down…

Waiting on Wednesday – 20 January 2016

Wishlist WednesdayWishlist Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Pen to Paper where we post about one book that has been hanging out on our wish list (either for a long time, or not so long)

When I started to look and upcoming book releases, I came to the realization that I don’t have all that many books sitting on my new release can’t wait to read shelf. Mostly due to the lack of time to sit and browse the upcoming release websites, but also because in general, very few of the authors that I follow on facebook (or other forms of social media) have posted about upcoming new releases that have piqued my interest. But I made sure to carve out a few minutes last night, post cycling workout, pre-dinner and bed (yeah, I was eating dinner right before I went to bed), to see if there was anything that caught my eye. Thanks to FictionDB and their new release database, I found the following that caught my eye

assassin's heartAssassin’s Heart – Sarah Ahiers
Release Date: February 2, 2016

Description:
In the kingdom of Lovero, nine rival Families of assassins lawfully kill people for a price. As a highly skilled member of one of these powerful clans, seventeen-year-old Lea Saldana has always trusted in the strength of her Family. Until she awakens to find them murdered and her home in flames. The Da Vias, the Saldanas’ biggest enemy, must be responsible—and Lea should have seen it coming. But her secret relationship with the Da Vias’ son, Val, has clouded her otherwise killer instinct—and given the Da Vias more reason than ever to take her Family down.

Racked with guilt and shattered over Val’s probable betrayal, Lea sets out to even the score, with her heart set on retaliation and only one thought clear in her mind: make the Da Vias pay.

Why I Can’t Wait?
I’ll admit that I have a thing for novels with assassin’s as the main characters ever since I read Robin LaFever’s series with assassin nuns. Added to that, the whole secret love (or so it sounds from the description), possible revenge theme as described sounds intriguing and I’ll be interested to see how the author approaches it. I know i’m already checking my library to see if that have it on order (and if they don’t, well then, i’ll (hopefully) sweet talk my favorite librarian into getting it for them).

What about you – what book(s) are you eagerly anticipating?
