TBR Tuesday – 09 June 15

TBR TuesdayWicked
Author: Sasha White

Purchased: November 11, 2009
Date Finished: 14 May, 2015
Time on TBR: 2012 Days

Review:
I’m always amazed at the books that I find when I start digging through my kindle archives and what inspired me to buy a certain book at a certain time. Looking at my record for this one, I bought it while I was deployed to Iraq in 2009 and not long before I headed home – so I’m thinking it may have been a book that I bought to read on the flight and then likely got distracted (I mean, really, those flights SUCK for reading). And then forgot about it (like it seems I have for many books on my TBR). But I needed a book for a reading challenge that had a single word titled (and was at least 250pgs in length) and this was one of the first ones that I found while browsing my kindle archives that I have actually managed to catalogue on Goodreads so far. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize at the time that this was a book 3 in the series, and I didn’t really have time to go back and read the previous 2 books in the series, so I hoped that I could just jump on in and not be too lost.

Thankfully, while this is a “series” they are only loosely combined – in that they are part of the Dungeon series, which is the club that individuals visit, but that the stories are all separate and can be read by themselves. I thought that the basis of the characters for Wicked – a divorce lawyer and Lara (who is actually very hard to describe character wise) was a great combo – the idea of the guy who needs dominance in his nightlife, because of the dichotomy in his day (sometimes having power, other times not). I found the suspense element of the story to be a bit of a let down – it just felt like it wasn’t really needed and I would have preferred to have seen more of a story between Karl and Lara, rather than the additional storyline – IMHO it just wasn’t really needed.

I’m intrigued enough by the series that I want to go back and read the previous two in the series (and its highly likely that I have at least one of them in the TBR pile somewhere). I gave Wicked 3.5 stars and will be definitely checking out more books by the author in the future.

TBR Tuesday – 26 May 2015

TBR TuesdayRuthless Heart
Author: Emma Lang

Purchased: July 6, 2010

Review: I’ve been a fan of Emma Lang for years – mostly with the writing under her other name (Beth Williamson) – so I was surprised to find this book loitering on the pile unread – I guess I bought it in a one-click haze and then forgot about it (yeah, I have a tendancy to do this). I will admit that I do prefer her Malloy family series to this book, but that I did enjoy this one more than several of her most recent books – so it was a fairly solid read by her. And I will admit that I am a sucker for a well-written historical western – they are for me, one of my favorite genres – unfortunately, it also seems to be a genre that has fallen out of favor over the last few years. Specifically, in this one, I liked how the prim and proper Eliza and the rough and tumble Grady came together – it was a great meshing of characters with enough suspense to make it enjoyable, without overwhelming the romance side of the house. I’m intrigued enough that I want to check out the other books in this series.

How did you guys do this week – did you find any gems on your TBR?

TBR Tuesday – 19 May 2015

TBR TuesdayAlien Overnight
Author: Robin L. Rotham

Purchased: December 6, 2012

Review: I’ll admit that I find most sci-fi type romances hard to get into because normally the world building is lacking, but i found that Ms Rotham did a good job of balancing both story development and world building in a relatively short book (less than 250pgs). It does seem that the theme of aliens needed sexual recruits in a common one in this genre (this is at least the third book I’ve read that used it as a story basis) – although the various authors try to tackle it in different ways. The story had some funny portions, as well as some more serious, but you could also see where this was a relatively early work by the author (the writing was a tad patchy at times). While I only gave this story 3 stars, I’m intrigued enough that I want to look at continuing the series in the future.

TBR Tuesday – 05 May 2015

TBR Tuesdaythe Graveyard Book
Author: Neil Gaiman

Purchased: 17 January 2012

Review: Neil Gaiman either seems to be an author you love or an author you hate – but honestly, I can’t really say that I fall into either camp. I like his writing and how he weaves the fantasy in his stories; but I always feel as though there is something missing when I’m done. The premise of the story reminded me in part of the movie BoxTrolls that I had just watched a couple of weeks ago, but rather than trolls taking in the child, it was ghosts in a graveyard. The story was much more of coming of age/finding your place in the world – and there were some parallels to Narnia in places (the part where the children get too old to return – or in this instance see the ghosts) being one. The author himself was the narrator of the audiobook and I think that added to my enjoyment of the story – I don’t know if I necessarily would have stuck it out, if I had just been reading the book. This is the second book I’ve read by Neil Gaiman (the first being The Ocean at the End of the Road) and unsure about where to go next…does anyone have any recommendations?

I’m slowing plugging away at Mt TBR – how about you?

TBR Tuesday – 21 April 2015

TBR TuesdayA Certain Wolfish Charm
Author: Lydia Dare
Series: #1 in the Westfield Wolves series

Purchase Date: November 6, 2010

Review: Its been a while since I’ve really read any PNR with werewolves and I found that I liked the historical setting with the PNR theme. It was something different (at least to me). One thing I enjoyed about the story was how the author just let little bits of backstory slip at a time and not just data-dumped. The romance was sweet with a touch of steam and I look forward to reading more books in the series when I get a chance. I gave A Certain Wolfish Charm 3 stars, but will be continuing the series.

TBR Tuesday – 14 April 15

TBR TuesdayOk, I’ll admit it, I don’t have anything today to put up for TBR Tuesday…as is Murphy’s Law, all the books you request from the library come in at once, so I have been reading lots of those in the last week. But I do have several TBR Tuesday books in progress – a romance from I bought in 2010 and an audiobook that I purchased back in 2012, so there will be more stuff coming in the future.

How about you – did you have a better week that me in tackling your goals?

TBR TuesdayDance Upon the Air
Author: Nora Roberts
Series: #1 in Three Sisters Island series

Date Purchased: November 11, 2010

Review: As long as I’ve been reading romance, Nora Roberts has been a staple in my library – she is one of the few authors I can normally just grab and go – but there are a lot of her backlist that I haven’t ventured in to, although I own many of them. Dance Upon the Air, first published in 2001, is one of them. I think I grabbed the audiobook at a sale on Audible a few years ago. Unfortunately for me, while it is one of her older works, I also felt too much like her other paranormal trilogies/quartets – even now they start blending together. While the audiobook itself wasn’t long (in the 11 hour range), the book itself just felt like it dragged and I spent a good chunk of the time wanting to slap the main characters. This was a 2 star listen for me. Dance Upon the Air was a 2 star listen for me, the narrator was slightly better (3 stars for it)

What book did you discover on Mt TBR this week?

TBR Tuesday – 31 March 2015

TBR TuesdayA Little Harmless Lie
Author: Melissa Schroeder
Series: #4 in the Harmless series

Date Purchased: December 14, 2010

Review: I honestly can’t believe I had forgotten about this series – it was one of the first erotic romance series I bought when I got my kindle back in 2009 (although I also purchased one of her books in print way back when as well). So it was kind of a shock to find not only this one, but at least one other one on the unread pile still. I enjoyed the dynamic between Dee and Micah and how she didn’t just bow down to him and the writing (as always) was hot. I’ll be digging into the pile to see what other books I have by Melissa still unread/buying the rest of the books in the series to get caught back up. 4 stars overall for a quick/hot read.

What about you guys – what book did you discover on Mt TBR this week?

TBR Tuesday – 24 March 2015

TBR Tuesday
The Courage to Love
Author: Samantha Kane
Series: #1 in the Brothers in Arms series

Date Purchased: November 21, 2011

Review: Anyone who knows me will probably laugh when I say this, but this book had too much sex and not enough story. In fact if you were to remove all the smexy parts, the story would probably have only taken up about 40pgs of the 208 (in the paperback version). Don’t get me wrong, the author can definately write hot sex scenes, but there comes a point where there is just too much and unfortunately that was this book. I had a really hard time liking/sympathsizing with Kate and everything that she went through, even though I did like Jason/Anthony’s story. I won’t be continuing the series. Overall, 2 stars.

What book(s) did you find on your TBR pile this week?

TBR Tuesday – 17 March 2015

TBR TuesdayTracker’s Sin
Author: Sarah McCarty
Series: #4 in the Hell’s Eight series

Date Purchased: Oct 1, 2010

Review: To say that I was disappointed in this book is an understatement. I remember a few years ago when I read books 1-3 in the series, I really enjoyed them and had high expectations for this once, because it was supposed to tie up the story ARC that had appeared in the previous 3. But it just felt like the author dialed this one it – the writing felt chunky, and didn’t flow well; the relationship between Tracker and Ari was blech and overall, just a let down. I’m undecided if I’ll continue the series or not – I know that I have book 6 somewhere on Mt TBR (and that would fit this challenge perfectly), but I guess time will tell.

What about you – Did you read any books off your TBR pile this week?
